OUTDOOR LAB: ENRICHING JEFFCO STUDENTS FOR 58 YEARS.
Mar. 01, 2016
Outdoor Lab has been enriching the lives of 6th grade and high school students in Jefferson County for more than 58 years. Located in the mountains of Colorado, Mount Evans and Windy Peak Schools give ALL students the opportunity to explore and experience subjects such as earth science, wildlife biology, astronomy, and forestry in a unique mountain setting. By engaging the students in problem solving, team building, decision-making and social interaction, the Outdoor Lab program helps to prepare Jeffco students for successful futures. Every student is given an opportunity to attend, regardless of physical or mental ability or ability to pay. High school students return as leaders to help teach the program and have their own unique experience. Shannon became the first Executive Director of the Outdoor Lab Foundation in December of 2011, when the beloved program was slated to close. Having graduated from Green Mountain High School, Shannon has been embedded in the Jeffco community for a long time. An alumna of the University of Oregon, Shannon returned to Colorado and spent over 12 years working in corporate sales and marketing both for ESPN and in the medical field. She has served on non-profit boards for the US Disabled Ski Team and for educational issues.

EXERCISE YOUR RIGHT TO LAUGH
May 03, 2016
Smooth. Clever. Hilarious. These words are used often to describe Sam Adams, who gained national attention by winning at the 2009 Great American Comedy Festival. Sam's energetic, comically-insightful act is 100 percent profanity-free and filled with observations about his every-day encounters. He is a headline performer at comedy clubs and corporate events across the country. Sam also has shared stages with national-touring comedians and music recording artists -- an eclectic, genre-jumping list of nationally-known performers ranging from comedians Frank Caliendo, Craig Ferguson, Kevin Nealon, David Alan Grier and Keenen Ivory Wayans to music's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band Heart and seven-time Grammy Award winner Al Jarreau. The Denver Business Journal once gave Sam a favorable review for "bringing down the house with a string of well-delivered lines that were notable for their lack of profanity, scatological or sexual references." Sam has appeared in several radio and TV commercials. He's an author, too, with a book titled 'If You Don't Believe Me: Lessons Learned from Listening To The Greats' which was released April 10, 2013. Off the record, Sam has more than 20 years of experience as a newspaper sports journalist. His work as a staff writer and columnist has appeared in The Denver Post, Rocky Mountain News and The Charlotte Observer. In 2003 Sam received the Print Journalist of the Year award from his peers in Colorado. He also is credited with television appearances on ESPN, Fox Sports, CBS and NFL Network, and has covered championship events at all levels -- most notable four Super Bowls, two Olympics, two NCAA men's basketball Final Fours, one Stanley Cup Finals and one World Series. In the fall of 2014 Sam was added as a regular contributor on "Sports A to Z" and the "Broncos Game Day Live" show -- both airing on Denver's NBC affiliate 9NEWS. |

GET REAL: Career Challenges, Changes & Choices
May 17, 2016
Kim DeCoste is the founder of DeCoste & Associates, a career management and consulting firm based in Denver, Colorado. She has enjoyed a long career in recruiting and professional development, having served as director of career services at Colorado Technical University, as a technical recruiter in Los Angeles, and as a subject matter expert creating curricula for online career services at the college and university level. As a career management consultant and former corporate recruiter, Kim DeCoste has championed and advised women at all career levels. And while she has watched women make tremendous strides in the professional world, she also noticed they’re still asking the same questions: How can I find more balance in my life? Why must I shoulder more responsibilities at home when I work just as hard as my husband does? How can I not only make more money but also find fulfillment in my career? Is it really possible to “have it all”? At this evening's meeting, Kim will share the lessons she has learned about women’s unique professional challenges. Through years of coaching clients, listening to friends, and exploring her own professional growth, she’s garnered a common sense approach to goal setting that’s realistic, empathetic, and practical. |

PILGRIM WHEELS: Reflections on a Cyclist Crossing America
Aug. 23, 2016
A lifelong cyclist, Neil Hanson’s two-wheeled adventures have taken him across America, along the Natchez Trace, and throughout northern Italy. Originally from Kansas, Neil currently lives in Colorado, where he navigates his bicycle up and down the inclines of the Rocky Mountains. Neil Hanson graduated from Kansas State University in the Flint Hills of Kansas, where he studied Architecture and Psychology. A short stint with an engineering firm taught him that sitting in one place and doing one thing wasn’t working for him, so he began a meandering career path to which he’s remained true. He’s worked as a carpenter, truck driver, concrete finisher, salesman, operations manager, computer programmer, and project manager. His executive experience included several years in c-level positions. |
