A thank you goes out to Frank Doherty whose press release about our more recent service fund grants was published in last Sunday's Worcester Telegram.

Val Callahan awarded Dr. Don Deprez a Paul Harris Fellow.  Congratulations Don!

Today was "shorts" day at the Rotary Club of Worcester's meeting.  Twenty-seven members came in their shorts which earned over $1,000 for the club!  Matt Erskine was especially charming in his Scottish Kilt and Dick Nevers took the prize for the most "colorful" pair of shorts.  Thanks to everyone who participated in the fun.   Click HERE for more pictures

We had a very productive club meeting today.  The operating budget for 2017 and the financial statement for the June 4th fund raising event were both reviewed.  The net amount made on the fund raiser was $45,182.

Membership Chair, Bob Mangan, reviewed his plans for the membership committee this year.  We will participate in the Business Expo again.  Bob also plans to hold a breakfast meeting for business leaders in the community,

Gary MacConnell reviewed the history of the Education Fund from when it ceased to be a loan fund to becoming a scholarship fund.

The Club meeting was so well received, that another one will be scheduled for either September 8th or September 15th.  More to come.

The Club is seeking nominations to fill a three year term on the Service Fund Committee.  The Service Fund Committee is the group that reviews grant requests.  The funds the Club distributes are the funds the club earns through its fund raising efforts.  If anyone is interested in this position, please let me know.

Happy Labor Day Weekend.

Rotary Rocket - August 2016

We had a terrific meeting this week.  It was a beautiful day at "Grill on the Hill."  Membership Chair, Bob Mangan announced that August is "membership month."  Bob is putting together a membership committee so please contact Bob to help out on this very important committee..

Satya Mitra, Foundation Chair, is also looking for committee members.  Satya reviewed the various incentives to giving to the Foundation from becoming a Paul Harris Fellow (a $1,000 donation) to making a bequest to the Foundation.  To give to the Foundation, checks should be made out to the "Rotary Foundation" and given to Satya for club credit.  Satya noted that this is the 100th year anniversary of the Foundation.  Satya's goal is to raise one million dollars in honor of the 100th year anniversary.

Rosemary Ford, a founder of the 365Z Foundation gave an inspirational talk about the Foundation's work in the schools to make children aware of the need to have empathy for others and to carry out kind deeds as part of every day living.

If you are interested in participating in the Service Projects Committee mini retreat on Friday, August 19th, please contact Amy Mosher Berry or myself.  The meeting will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. and will include a cookout.

Meeting speakers for the rest of August are:

August 11, 2016:  District Governors, Pat and Skip Doyle
August 18, 2016:  Worcester Police Chief, Steven Sargent
August 25, 2016:  Matthew Johnson, Director of Social Innovation at Worcester State University

Rotary Rocket - July 2016 Part 3

We had a terrific Rotary meeting this week.  Great comraderie, good food and an interesting speaker!  Next year's Nashoba Valley Club President, Mary Garcia, was a visitor.  Bob gave out Certificates of Appreciation to 2015-2016 board members, Krista Piazza and Don Deprez.  Bob also alerted club members that he will be looking for people to serve on the membership committee.  Dick Nevers volunteered.  Skip Hall indicated he was interested in serving on the public relations committee.  Barbara noted that Amy Mosher Berry will lead a mini retreat on Friday, August 19th for anyone interested in serving on the Community Service Projects committee.  More to come on that event.

Satya turned in $3,100 in additional donations/sponsorships for our June 4th gala.  Steve Tankanow is another $1,000 member sponsorship donor for which Satya us donating an additional $100.

Save the date:  Thursday, August 25th is shorts day at the Rotary Club of Worcester.  Last year, thanks to Satya and Ken Harling, the club raised around $1,000 on "shorts" day.  Please come prepared!

Our speaker this week was Michele Miller, founder of the Central Mass Lyme Foundation.  Michele lost her mother to Lyme disease because she had been misdiagnosed as having ALS.  Michele discussed the difficulty of detecting the disease, how easy it  is to get the disease and ways you can protect yourself from getting the disease.  Her discussion of how little the medical community knows about the disease and that testing for the disease is not always accurate was somewhat disturbing.  To learn more, visit their web site:  CentralMassLyme.com

Enjoy the weekend.  Barbara

Rotary Rocket - July 2016 Part 2

A message from new club president Barbara Guthrie,

I want to thank everyone who attended Thursday's meeting.  We have 45 people in attendance, gained one new member who is transferring from Arizona and had another potential new member in attendance.  Aaron Payson gave a powerful invocation followed by a robust patriotic song led by Val Callahan.  Bob honored 2015-2016 board and committee members with certificates of appreciation.  Chris Gates, Dave Frazier and Mark Fuller received "Service Above Self" recognitions and Satya Mitra received the President's award for his generous support of the Rotary Foundation.  I was humbled to receive the Rotarian of the Year Award.

John Sbrogna, our Assistant District Governor, installed our 2016-2017 officers and directors.  It was an honor to receive my president's pin from my daughters.  Rich Prager did his usual terrific job capturing the moments with his photography.  Please take a moment to look at the pictures on our web site.

As your new president, I plan to carry on with Bob's theme of teamwork.  We need all members to get involved to help our club successfully carry out our club visions.  Please volunteer for a committee that interests you.  Committee chairs are:  Bob Mangan, Membership; Amy Mosher Berry, Service Projects; Brad White and Frank Doherty, Co-Chairs, Public Relations; Tom Valentine and Gretchen Antonelli, Co-Chairs, Fund Raising; Chet Caswell & Aaron Payson, Co-Chairs,  Speakers; Dave Frazier, RYLA; Satya Mitra, Foundation; Gary MacConnell, Education Fund; and Frank Doherty, Service Fund.

Satya Mitra reported that our net profit from our June fundraiser is approximately $20,000.  Our fund raising goal to the City alone was $41,000.  Sayta is in the process of continuing to collect sponsorship funds for the event.  He presented Bob with checks totaling around $16,000.  Satya also recognized Steve Loring, Bob Johnson, Al Biscelgia,Tim McGee, Ken Harling, Rod White and Dave Frazier for donating $1,000 or more in sponsorships.  Satya will add an additional $100 for each of these donations.  Satya encouraged other club members/friends to provide additional sponsorships so that we might reach and surpass our goal.

Thank you for a memorable installation!

Barbara Guthrie

Rotary Rocket - July 2016

Good morning,
I hope everyone had a fantastic 4th of July! I want to thank everyone for a fantastic 2015 - 2016 Rotary year! We have had the privilege of helping many people in need in our community this year through our community service and our Service Fund. We have raised funds, increased membership, and worked on some great projects.
Our club is continuing to finalize the Haiti project as well as the Opioid Addiction project (as soon as the fund raising efforts are tallied).

This year we have made a few changes, our meeting location for one, the 50/50 raffle was changed to a more challenging method. We finally got the club laptop working and a new banner is on the way. We participated in many district activities such as the annual district convention where we had a hospitality suite. Our club was recognized at the district convention for our outstanding community service. Our club hosted 6 students for RYLA and many members participated at RYLA. This year, as we have for the past few years we have participated in the Chamber of Commerce Business Expo where we were able to showcase our club, what we do and advertise our fundraisers. We had some fantastic guests and guest speakers throughout the year as well as some challenges. When we were faced with challenges we came through. The theme was TEAMWORK. We are a team of club members. When something needs to be done we ask how can I help? What can I do?

I hope I covered everything....
I am proud to be a member of the Rotary Club of Worcester and proud to have served as president last year.
Thank you all for making a difference in the lives of those less fortunate here in Worcester and around the world. We are blessed and You are truly a Gift to the World!

Our next meeting will be July 14th at The Grill on the Hill, Green Hill Golf Course, 12:00 - 1:30. This will be the induction of officers for the 2016 - 2017 Rotary Year. I can't stress enough that all members should attend. Assistant Governor John Sbrogna will induct Barbara Guthrie as the Club President and her Board of Directors.

Thank you!

Bob Mangan, Immediate Past President, Membership Chair

Rotary Rocket - June 17th

We had a fantastic meeting yesterday! We began our meeting with a moment of silence for the victims of the senseless attack on a popular Orlando FL. night club where 49 people were killed and 53 suffered gunshot wounds. Our prayers go out to each of them.  Reverend Aaron Payson began the meeting with a prayer and sang the National Anthem.

Our guest speaker was Paul Provost, Publisher of the Worcester Telegram and Gazette. Paul discussed the 160 year history of the paper, where it is today and the future of print. He also discussed the many digital opportunities for the newspaper and the delivery channels available. He fielded many questions from members.

We inducted a new member, Kimberly Goulette, Executive Director of the American Red Cross. Past District Governor Val Callahan did the honors. Please join me in welcoming Kimberly to the Rotary Club of Worcester!

I hope all the mothers in the club had a wonderful Mother’s Day! We had our last meeting at Leo’s this past Thursday. There was a good crowd on hand. It’s always good to see members we haven’t seen in a while. Our guest speaker was Ray Pfau. Ray is a member of the Nashoba Valley Club and he talked about an ongoing community service project his club does three times a year. The project is called “The Repair Café”. A few times a year members of the Nashoba Valley Club get together and offer their services and talents to fix anything from a transistor radio to a computer. This service is great for people that can’t afford to replace an item or just don’t want to part with something special. Another thing, it’s also good for the wallet as there is no charge for the service unless parts have to be purchased. Ray talked about the various things they fixed and challenges on items they couldn’t. All in all they have a lot of fun while they work together repairing the broken items.

New Meeting Location: Beginning this week we will be meeting at the Grill on the Hill at Green Hill Golf Course. The address for your GPS is 1929 Skyline Drive Worcester. It is off Belmont Street and neat the Technical High School. This choice was made due to the results of the survey conducted last month.

Our 50/50 raffle There were no winners in the raffle so that brings our total to $923.00 if a club member should win! If a guest or visiting Rotarian wins they receive ½ of the days take and we roll the pot forward, the joker is worth $10.00.  You must come to a meeting to join in on the fun.

I have attached the agenda for next week’s meeting.  Our speaker will be Richard Moore. Richard is a victim of the civil war in Ireland in the 70s, he made peace with his shooter, met the Dali Lama and is helping children in war-torn regions of Africa.

Hopefully a lucky member will walk out tomorrow with the top prize! By the way I stand corrected this is not tax free money…. Just thought I would disclose this!

This week’s guest speaker is C.J. Posk, author of a book, Worcester Stacks up. Please make every effort to attend. I look forward to seeing you.

Rotary Rocket - March 26th edition

Good afternoon,

We opened the meeting with a moment of silence for the loss of Diane McConnell and the victims of the attacks in Brussels.

Reverend Payson opened with a prayer and also led us in song in his fantastic voice, God Bless America. I think there were golfers saluting at the 9th hole.

We had a great meeting yesterday at The Grill on the Hill (Green Hill golf Course). The location, food and hospitality were good.

We had a good crowd on hand for our guest speakers Steve Ives and Nawal Ahmed from the Islamic Community. They gave a powerful talk about the Muslim culture and community here in Worcester. We had a lengthy discussion after during Q & A. I found it very educational. As I mentioned to Steve, too many times we focus on our differences and we should look at what we all have in common.

We have a Kids Café’ coming up next week 3/29 (4 people needed) and on 4/26 from 4:00 – 6:00 at the Boys and Girls Club 65 Tainter Street. Please contact Amy at amy@expressivecapital.com if you are interested in serving 300 hungry children.

Celebrate Community! We need you to step up to the plate and hit it out of the park! Please contact Barbara Guthrie with any donated auction items, sponsorships or seating at our annual event!

District Conference! Don’t forget to sign up for the District Conference May 20 – 22 in Plymouth! Our club will have a Hospitality Suite. A great escape to the Cape for the weekend!

The Rotary Foundation! I know I keep asking and asking for help and I need a lot of help! But I would like to see our club be an Every Rotarian every Year club. Please donate what you can the TRF.

50/50 raffle! – There were no winners this week so we continue on as the pot grows! There is one joker worth $10.00 left in the deck as well as the 10 of diamonds which is worth $643.00 (plus half of the day’s take next week) TAX FREE DOLLARS should a member win!

Next week we will be meeting at Leo’s and our guest speaker will be Captain Dan Brunelle of the Salvation Army.
Please make every effort to attend and let’s fill up the room for Captain Dan Brunelle!

I will send out a brief survey on Monday regarding possible meeting locations for our club.

Thank you for all you do to improve the lives of those less fortunate.
Thank you for being valuable members of this club!
Thank you for being Rotarians,

Rotary Rocket - Happy Birthday - 104 years old!

Happy Birthday to the Rotary Club of Worcester!
Our Club is 104 today!

We had a fantastic meeting yesterday! Lisa Brennan and Beth Tingly from Ascentria Care Alliance (formerly Lutheran Social Services of New England) were our guest speakers.  Although Ascentria Care Alliance provides many social services for families, children, the elderly and disabled the discussion focused on Refugees and Immigrants to America! In Massachusetts, Ascentria offers refugee resettlement services; legal services for immigrants; foster care for refugee children through the Unaccompanied Refugee Minors Program (URMP); and the micro-enterprise development program to train and assist refugees to start or strengthen their own business and attain economic self-sufficiency through self-employment.

Prior to the meeting the Board of Directors approved a membership application brought in by Satya Mitra for David O’Doherty. David is a Universal Services Advocate at Veterans Inc. and specializes in housing. David’s application was accepted unanimously by the board. David was also in attendance at the meeting. Please join me in Welcoming David to the Club!
We also had another application and new member attending yesterday as a guest of Mark Fuller. Matt Erskine. Matt came to the meeting, application in hand. The board will vote on his application via e-mail.
Matt is a past member of the club and wishes to rejoin. He is an attorney in Worcester at Erskine & Erskine LLC. He is also the son of a long standing member Matt Erskine.
Once Matt’s application has been voted I will schedule an induction for both our new members.

The Club received a nice thank you letter from Kaska Yawo and ACE for our donation of $2,500 to provide food for breakfast and lunch for youth and families in the ACE program.

Kids Café – Amy is looking for volunteers to help with the upcoming Kids Café programs on Tuesday March 29th and Tuesday April 26th please contact Amy at amy@expressivecapital.com if you would like to volunteer to serve 300 hungry children at the Boys and Girls Club.

District Convention – Brad has sent all members the link to sign up for the District Convention in Plymouth MA. Please let us know if you plan on attending the convention. The Rotary Club of Worcester will have a Hospitality Suite. For more information please contact Chris Gates at cjgates@charter.net.

Celebrate Community! – As you know this is our biggest fundraiser of the year and a true celebration of 4 members of the Worcester community who demonstrated Service Above Self! At this time we need your help to make this year’s fundraising efforts a success! Your club is seeking auction items, in-kind donations, sponsorships, booklet ads and attendees for our fundraiser. This is going to be a lot of fun as we will have a full dinner, live music, silent and live auctions and the presentations of our Service Above self awards!

50/50 raffle – Ken Harling had the lucky number but not the 10 of Diamonds. The pot has grown to $570.00 plus whatever we take in next week. It could build up to over $600…. Should a member win!

Our Guest speaker next week will be Rob Antonelli Assistant Director of the Parks, Recreation and Cemetery Department for the City of Worcester. He is also the husband of club member Gretchen!

Please make every effort to attend. Attendance is so important because you make a difference in the lives of others and YOU are a GIFT to the WORLD!

Thank you,

Rotary Rocket - March 7th

We had good meeting on Thursday. We opened the meeting with a prayer and pledge. However our Patriotic Song was provided by Mark O’Flaherty. He provided a link that went to a YouTube video of Kate Smith singing God Bless America! It was the extended version so we had to cut it short.

Unfortunately our guest speaker canceled at the last minute so Carl Gomes talked about the Rotaract Advisors training last Monday at Framingham State University (finally something in my neck of the woods).
Emily and I both attended the training which was very good. Carl talked about the importance of guiding and mentoring the Rotaract club members. He discussed possibly having a Rotaract version of PETS for incoming club presidents as well as other ongoing training to grow and retain membership.

Roger Frost talked about scanning pictures of his family to the cloud, so years from now family members will have access to what could end up being lost photos. He also talked about Rotary, membership, Service and committees and how important these things are to our club. Roger, I can’t agree with you more!

Every member should be on a committee. Every committee is important to the function of the club, its members and the community we serve. I have always said “Many Hands Make Little Work”

Barbara updated us on our Annual fundraiser Celebrate Community. There will be a Celebrate Community meeting following our regular club meeting on Thursday!

Kids Café’ upcoming dates: Tuesday March 29 and Tuesday April 26.

District Conference May 20 – 22 in Plymouth MA. Book now! Brad has sent out the link from Karin Gaffney.

We have a Board of Directors Meeting coming up this week 3/10 11:00 at Leo’s

Bengts’ friend and fellow Rotarian Jan had two chances to pick the 10 of Diamonds but could not find it… There are 30 cards left in the deck which includes two jokers = $10.00 each and the 10 of Diamonds which (to a Worcester club member) is worth $536.00.

Our guest speaker this week is Beth Tingely from Ascentria Social Services.

Please make every effort to attend!
Thank you for being Rotarians and thank you for your Service Above Self!

Rotary Rocket - March 2nd editions

We had a fantastic meeting last week as our guest speakers were Lois Melican, President of the American Chestnut Society Chapter and her staff member Dennis. Lois discussed the blight that killed all of the American chestnut trees from the 1930’s and 1950’s and what the American Chestnut Society is doing to regenerate and re-introduce these lost trees to our country.

We also had a couple of guests from the WPI Rotaract Club – Mike Figueroa and Andrew Joshua Nagal. Kaska also had a guest from ACE, Amy Corneliussen.

RYLA - Past President Dave Frazier discussed RYLA and that we are looking for 6 students to apply. The club has paid for 6 slots. If you know of any students that are interested please contact Dave Frazier, Krista Piazza or Dianne Bruce.

Service Fund Check Presentation – Service Fund Committee Chair Frank Doherty presented a check for $2,500 to Kaska Yawo for the ACE food program. This will provide meals for students in the ACE program.

Kids Café – We have 2 dates scheduled for Kids Café Tuesday March 29 from 4-6 PM at the Boys and Girls Clun on Tainter Street and Tuesday April 26th. Please contact Amy Mosher-Berry if you are interested in helping to serve 300 hungry children. This is a great community service project. We would like the Rotaractors to get involved as well.

Celebrate Community – I will be sending out the flier for our annual fundraiser Celebrate Community flier to each of you. Your support is needed. We need Sponsors, Auction items and attendees. Please help us reach our goal of $100,000! Remember, our success is not dependent on a few people on a committee, but our entire club! This is why we joined Rotary!

TRF – Also don’t forget to contribute to the Rotary Foundation. Please donate what you can so we can be an Every Rotarian Every Year club! Every little bit helps!

This week Emily and I attended a Rotaract Advisors training at Framingham State University. Carl and Steve did a fantastic job organizing the evening and the presenters were fantastic. The content was great as our own WPI Rotaract members Mike and Rita presented.

Board of Directors Meeting – Thursday March 10th 11:0 at Leo’s.

There were no winners in the 50/50 so the total this week is $506 plus our take on Thursday. The pot continues to grow as the deck of cards gets smaller…
This week we are meeting at Leo’s, please make every effort to attend.
Thank you for all you do to make the world a better place!

I understand that things went well at El Basha last week and our guest speaker was fantastic! I am sorry to have missed the meeting but I know that Barbara did a great job! Thank you Barbara for filling in. I understand the jackpot still has not been won. That means we start off the day with $475.00 plus the day’s take. The deck is getting smaller and the pot continues to grow!

This week we will be meeting at Leo’s Restaurant. We have folks from the American Chestnut Association addressing the club. Following our meeting we will have a Celebrate Community meeting!

Please let us know if you plan on going to the District Conference May 20-22 in Plymouth MA. We are planning on having a Hospitality Suite at the conference. The theme this year is Sweets and Rock and Roll. Chris Gates has taken the lead on this. I have made a few suggestions such as contacting Hebert’s Candies for a donation of chocolates and perhaps we could have a lip sync contest or maybe Karaoke!

At this time I would also like to remind members to give to the Rotary Foundation. This is an important part of what we do. It gives our club and others the power to provide needed goods and services here and abroad through the grant process. To date we have only 12 members that have made donations. We are a club of 91 members so please donate what you can and let’s make this year an “Every Rotarian Every Year”

The club has made some purchases, I have asked for funding to upgrade the club computer and purchase a trunk to put our stuff in. Over the weekend I purchased a trunk with locks as well as QuickBooks, Microsoft Office Professional 2016 as well as antivirus software and Adobe Acrobat Reader. This will make our laptop more useful to the club. We may be able to automate what we currently do at check in and monthly reporting.

Please make every effort to attend our meeting! Let’s fill up the room and show our guests what a great club we have!
Thank you for all you do to help those in need.

Rotary Rocket - Feb 4th Edition

We had a light turnout last week, however, that didn’t stop us from having a great meeting! Our guest speakers were Younhee Shin and Kyung from the Korean Spirit and Culture Promotions Project. Younhee and Kyung presented a fantastic video about the history of South Korea which brought us to the advancements of today. This is fitting considering the Rotary International Convention will be held in Korea this year. The presentation was very educational. They also had books available for us to take.
Speaking of conventions, on February 18th District Governor Nominee, Karen Gaffney will talk briefly about the upcoming District Conference May 20 – 22 in Plymouth MA.

Last Thursday evening the Worcester School Committee recognized the Rotary Club of Worcester for its contribution of $50,000 to the Myra Hiatt Kraft Footbridge project. In attendance was President Bob Mangan, Past President Dr. Satya Mitra and Club Photographer Dr. Rich Prager.

We have a potential member as Maureen Harrington invited Tony Marini, Manager at TD Bank to come to a meeting. Tony was greeted with an application and information about our club.

Our meeting this week will be at Leo’s, our guest speaker will be Dr. Satya Mitra. Satya will talk about his trip to India and the progress at the school our club helped to fund with a Global Grant. He will also talk about some of the other clubs he visited as well as the importance of giving to the Rotary Foundation. Your donations do make a difference in the lives of others here and around the world! Thank you for your generosity!

There were no winners in the 50/50 however the deck of cards is getting smaller and the pot is up to (I think) $425.00…

Please make every effort to attend. Your attendance makes a difference to your fellow Rotarians, Guest Speaker and our Guests. Who knows you may learn something or win the 50/50 raffle!
Following our regular meeting will be a Celebrate Community Meeting. Barbara is away and left me in charge… I hope to have an agenda soon…

Next week 2/18/16 we will be meeting at El Basha on Park Ave Worcester. This is a location we will be trying out as a possible meeting place. There will also be a Board of Directors meeting at El Basha prior to our regular club meeting.
Thank you for all you do to help those in need here and around the world. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of others. Thank you for being Rotarians.

I want to Wish you a Safe and Happy Holiday Season!
There will be no meeting this week or next week due to the Christmas and New Year holiday! Our next meeting will be January 7th at Leo's.

Last week we had our annual Glogg party at the Tatnuck Country Club. We had 55 members and guests in attendance as the Seven Hills Charter Public School Choir filled the air with seasonal song and Bengt Hansson filled our cups with Glogg. It was very festive as members and guests gathered by the fireplace.

We had many raffle items on hand and raised $900 for the general fund. Paul Shusas was unable to attend but he did donate raffle items! Thank you Paul. Ken Harling did a great job running the raffle as both Ken and Rod White showed up in shorts... How about that in December! Ken also started the Happy dollars off with $100.00. Everyone had an opportunity to tell why they are happy. Thank you Ken, well done!

Bob Johnson was able to get a full roster for bell ringing as well as for serving a Christmas meal at the Salvation Army. THANK YOU to all the volunteers.

Thank you to all our volunteers and Thank you to everyone that helped to make our Glogg party a success! None of this would be possible without YOU! Together we can do more good in the world than we can do as individuals!

Have a great Holiday!
See you next year!

If you want to attend the lunch we need to know as the Chamber is looking for our numbers and the names of participants.Lunch is $55.00 per person and you can make your check out to the club (cash is also accepted). Remember there is no meeting at Leo's on November 5th.

Our guest speakers were Cassandra Andersen - Health Department and Eric Batista - City Managers office. Eric and Cassandra discussed the project our club is considering taking on. This is a great opportunity for the city and our club. As you have heard in the news, from presidential candidates and Governor Baker, the Opioid addiction problem is nation wide as well as in central Ma. We have been presented with an opportunity to help battle drug abuse and Opioid addiction in the City of Worcester. This problem goes across every socioeconomic line. Helping an individual helps entire families. I firmly believe that this will take off just like the NICU camera's did a few years ago.

Road Trip! November 19th we will be meeting at the Compass Tavern 90 Harding Street Worcester. Dave Frazier and the search committee want us to try this location to see if it will suit our needs.

Kids Cafe - We can use a couple more volunteers to help out on Tuesday from 4:00 - 6:00 at the Boys and Girls Club on Tainter Street. Please contact Amy Mosher Berry at amy@expressivecapital.com
50 / 50 raffle - the lucky number was drawn to give Charlie Houston a chance at the $160.00 but Charlie did not find the 10 of Diamonds.
Hope to see you at Pine Ridge on Friday evening Tee time is at 3:00!

Here is a picture if Satya with students at Piyali Learning Center, at a remote village, called Piyali about an hour drive from Calcutta. The school is being built by the Rotary club. Free education is provided at the school to poor girls in this remote village. It is an amazing story!

AG Joe Sullivan from the Wachusett Club informed us of the new Rotary World Peace Scholarship.  If you know someone who is not connected to Rotary, and is a master's degree candidate and is interested in a two year university program in world peace, contact Joe or Rich Prager for additional details about how that person can apply for the scholarship.

Krista Piazza did Happy Dollars, and again there was much mirth and merryment.

Korey Lee from the Seven Hills Charter Public School announced that there will be a "take a student to work" day in February, and asked if any Rotarians would like to participate.

The speaker today was Opal Stone from the Worcester Institute for Supportive Reentry.  She described their program which attempts to decrease recidivism by helping former prison inmates reintegrate into society.  They are funded by the Health Foundation of Central Massachusetts, and they work with other organizations, including Sheriff Evangelidis' office, and Brandeis University.  She reported that preliminary results have been positive.

Next meeting is the Special Holiday Glogg Celebration.  Bengt will bring his secret libation (don't inhale the aroma too quickly), and all are asked to bring a little something that can be used for the raffle. Ken virtually said that the bravest Worcester Rotarians (men and women) will be wearing a blue blazer and khaki shorts.

Rotarian Bob Johnson recalled the Haunted House fundraiser at the Ecotarium from 25 years ago.  (I also recall watching my father, Peter Wyatt, scaring the paying visitors that evening as a robot monster).

Seven new members were inducted into the club:  (l. to r.) Dave Frazier, James Umphrey, Krista Piazza, Brian Scales, Tony Economou, Jeffrey Chin, Steve Tankanow, Angela Bovill, with Val Callahan and Satya Mitra.

Our speaker was new member Angela Bovill, CEO of Lutheran Social Services.  She came from the private sector to work at LSS in 2008, and found that most of their programs were government funded, and were focused on the short-term safety and stability of their clients.  She felt it was important to enhance the longer-term connection of their clients to the community, and she dedicated herself to accomplishing this goal, in part, by applying the principles of "compassion, integrity, and courage."  LSS has 70 programs across New England.

Val Callahan, along with leading our club in song, wanted to let the club know that currently, our club  has $78 per capita donations to The Rotary Foundation under Frank's year as President.  We need $1100 more dollars to make it an average of $100 per capita.  Once we do that, we move to the head of the cue to qualify for more grants for NIC View and other projects.  Right now, District Governor Rich Dietz will match you for up to 200 Rotary Recognition  Points for every dollar you contribute up to $200.  Also, we will use Rotary Recognition Points to give Kate Moody a Paul Harris Fellow to thank her for her service to our club.  Membership Chair Bob Mangan stepped right up and donated $50, and several other club members joined him.

Please mail your check made out to our Foundation Chair, Val Callahan.  Make the check out to THE ROTARY FOUNDATION.  Mail the check to:

Welcome to Rich Prager appreciation week :-)

Sadly, Rich was unable to attend, and we have no pictures from the excellent meeting at the African Art Museum with the founder of Nypro, Inc, Gordon Langdon.

Current President Frank Doherty reports

We had 14 Rotarians plus guest Jean Bishop attending the January 17th meeting in the African Art Museum in Clinton, which Gordon Langton addressed. Gordon is the founder of Nypro Inc., the largest plastic producer in the world. He has retired from an active role in Nypro and now his primary activity is collecting: African Art for this gallery; Russian Icons in his other museum; and a large collection of Buddhas, which as yet doesn't have a museum home. He thinks his African collection exceeds even the holdings of such great museums as the Metropolitan and the MFA. His Russian Icon collection is the most extensive in the world outside of Russia. Following Gordon's talk, 12 of us had lunch at the Via Alto (High Street) in downtown Clinton.

See you back at The Coral Seafood next week.

A warm Rotary welcome to Franklin and Mingi Bodine from Boylston, MA.

Franklin works at Intel designing computer chips, and Mingi homeschools their daughter.

Franklin

Due to a wonderful benefit from working at Intel - a sabbatical every seven years, the Bodine family recently traveled to the Middle East.  They returned with many wonderful pictures and experiences that they shared with Rotary International.  Mingi explained how the different religious factions live in peace with commerce in Israel, and Franklin explained the biblical history of Jerusalem, and even the tomb that perhaps was where Jesus arose from the dead.

What an interesting, and insightful PowerPoint presentation that the Bodine's created.  They shared so many interesting facts, such as sea level being well above the water, and the historical naming of the Red Sea, to the pictures of the Middle East spices, and how everyone gets along peacefully with commerce as a mutual goal.

Don't forget - the annual Christmas Glug Party will be Dec 13th at The Coral Seafood.  Ken Harling sends his regrets, as he'll be having other adult beverages in a secret, undisclosed location near a beach.

Also - Bob Johnson is looking for helpers for the Salvation Army Christmas Meal - Dec 23rd from 4-6PMish.  Please see Bob and sign up.

Bob is also looking for Salvation Army Bell ringers for Dec 8th, and Dec 15th.   Slots are open from 10-noon, noon-2, and 2-4.  Please sign up, and ring the bell for charity.

Next week at The Coral Seafood - fine food every week - Please come to a meeting and try some!

I want to thank everyone for making the Business Expo a complete success! We were able to build awareness in the business community with our strong presence at the show, we built credibility with this year’s NICView project and we gathered some strong leads for membership.

The expo was a success because of your support, involvement and presence. We contributed to the basket, signed up to attend to booth duty, printed fliers, delivered our message and had fun doing it! I especially want to thank Dan Vinton for making the booth possible and also the board of directors for approving and providing funds for this very important event.

The winner of our basket was Courtney Feeley Karp of Prince Lobel Tye, LLP, a law firm in Boston.

Next week, a presentation will be given by a visiting delegation from Belarus visiting Worcester on a 3-week professional training program sponsored by USAID and organized by the International Center of Worcester.  The theme of their program is “Regional Sustainable Economic Development.”   The group consists of municipal and regional government officials, university faculty, and leaders of non-profit and other private organizations.  Since Belarus’ independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, political and economic reforms have been slow.  Their presentation today will be on “Business Environment and Enterprise Development in the Republic of Belarus.”

Brad Wyatt says he will fine himself for missing three meetings in a row, as this week he is driving to Pittsburgh to drop his oldest off at Carnegie Mellon University for his freshman year.

Royce Anderson and Geroge Bernardin are trying to revive our International Service Committee. In past years, this Committee played a very important role in the work of the Club. We hosted Group Study Exchanges from a number of countries and supported numerous international service projects - both large and small. Royce and George will be scheduling a meeting before the end of August to discuss how and when we might restart this process. Please contact Royce [randerson@clarku.edu ] or George [gfbernardin@verizon.net] if you would be interested in taking part in this discussion. No, we did not have Rotary on Thanksgiving.

However Cheryl Marc, Gary MacConnell, Charles Cullum, and Bob Johnson donated their time at the Salvation Army.

Mike Lanava of the Worcester Chamber of Commerce informed the Worcester Rotary Club about the state of the business community in Worcester

Lanava

Questions abounded on how to network with the many new small and minority businesses in Worcester.  Mike did a great job explaining the work that the Chamber does in Worcester to assist business (like fighting the unrealistic new elevator requirements for older buildings)

Several Rotarians volunteered to serve meals to the poor at Salvation Army this Sunday.  Please note, for this week only the time is changed to 4PM, and the location is the same, 640 Main St.  Also, remember to enter through the back door and do NOT park in the liquor store lot, as they tow.

Congrats to Val Callahan who was named District Governor for 2014-15.

Val

Please note - in two weeks, there will be a regular meeting on Dec 1st at the Coral Seafood (Not the Chamber of Commerce Breakfast as previously planned)

This will be a Club Assembly, where we will discuss the 100 year celebration and membership and leadership.

Also - the Worcester Rotary Club will be looking for volunteers to ring the Salvation Army bell in two hour shifts from 10AM to 4PM on Dec 10th, and 17th at Sam's Club.

Rotary Rocket (Oct 20th AND 27th)

Posted by Bradford Wyatt on Oct 29, 2011

Hello,

Welcome to a rare two week edition of the Rotary Rocket.  As the author (me), was out of town last week, I was unable to create the weekly story.

Our main speaker on Oct 20th was Gary Rosen, of WCRN 830am radio, the RAVE (Rosen and Vecchio Experience).  Former teacher, school committee member and city councilor Rosen discussed education, and current local issues and the upcoming municipal election.
