Jonathan Davis, awarded a second Rotary Scholarship to continue his studies at Ithaca College

Donate a silent auction item, or bid on a silent auction item to support deserving students while enjoying yourself at the Rotary Pops April 13, 2012 at 8 p.m. at 51 Walden Street in Concord.  In 2011, the Rotary Club of Concord donated $18,000 in scholarships to eight students…five entering college and three previous winners who needed help to continue their college careers.

In addition, part of the Silent Auction proceeds will support those whose lives were disrupted by the devastating twister that leveled their high school this Spring. Funds will be administered by a local Rotary Club there.

If you would like to help people like these by donating to the Silent Auction, please contact Sharon Spaulding, ses@spauldingco.com. For tickets to the Pops ($25 per guest), contact Dick Hale, 508-878-6577.

Scholarship winners are:

William Moss who won the prestigious Eaton Memorial Scholarship, given in memory of Concord Rotarian William Eaton.  At CCHS, Moss excelled in athletics and class government.  A three-season athlete, he played soccer and indoor and outdoor track.  He was elected Vice President of his class in his freshmen year, and served all four years. His class became the “green class”, carrying out community projects with the environment in mind. Examples include planting trees along the driveway to the new turf fields at CCHS and ordering eco-friendly t-shirts. In his sophomore year he attended theRotary Youth Leadership Institute, and later received the Rotary Class Act Award for his work in student government. Through Holy Family Parish, he volunteered at soup kitchens in Lawrence and Boston.  Between his junior and senior years he went on a service trip to San Marcos, Nicaragua, one of Concord’s sister cities, where he worked on combating deforestation, served in nursing homes, and volunteered in public schools. Moss says the trip helped him appreciate everything he has in life. Moss also received the Edward B. Caiger Award and a scholarship from the Albert and Evelyn Black Fund. Rotary is honored to support William Moss in pursuit of his studies in international relations at the University of Richmond in Virginia.

Madeline Mahoney who won the Huckins Memorial Scholarship, given in memory of Thomas R. Huckins, a longtime Concord resident and consummate Rotarian. In her junior and senior years at CCHS Mahoney was secretary, then president of Interact Club, the high school level club of Rotary International. In that capacity, she worked with Gaining Ground, City Year, Cradles to Crayons and many other non-profit community service organizations. She participated in Interact’s first and second talent shows at CCHS to raise money for their International outreach to Iran and Japan.  In addition to the Rotary Scholarship, Mahoney was awarded the CCPOPS Scholarship, given to a student who has excelled in the arts program at CCHS. Rotary is honored to support Madeline Mahoney as she studies acting at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts with plans to double in English or Psychology.

Other Concord Carlisle seniors who received scholarships include Chloe Penaud, who will be attending Roger Williams University; Jesse Adegbe, who will attend the University of Hartford; and David Blaides, who will be attending Bucknell University.

College students who received scholarships for the second year include Jonathan Davies, Ithaca College; Meredith Lorch, Emory University; and Merrill Brady, Bates College.

Merrill Brady states that her first year at Bates was academically rigorous and free spirited. She is on the Field and Track team, studies violin, tutors Lewiston middle and high school students, and is a DJ, all while mastering chemistry and other pre-med subjects. As a sophomore she looks forward to a heavy schedule of Cellular and Molecular Biology, Physics and Organic Chemistry.  Also a Politics major, she will study Politics in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Jonathan Davies is a rising sophomore at Ithaca College studying Communication Management and Design, with a minor in Education. This summer he worked at a Teaching Assistant for American University’s Discover the World of Communication Program. During the school year he works for Ithaca College’s Information Technology Services, and is Co-President of Idealistic Truths, an undergraduate journal about education. He is also Co-Producer of IC-IU, a TV show airing on ICTV.
