My last article dealt with the criticality of our foundation in accomplishing the Rotary areas of focus and, believe me, it is more than just critical, but there is one resource even more important than the Foundation-and that is the vision and determination of Rotarians to serve their fellow man and to make the world a MUCH better place to live!!!

I was glancing through the stories coming out of Rotary clubs around the country this morning and what struck me was the unbelievable drive and focus of individual Rotarians and individual clubs who see a need in the world and don't rest until that need has been met. For instance, Al Stehli from the Davis California noon club was working on a housing project around Machu Picchu in Peru and was awed by the hard-working commitment of the locals to crafting a better life-in a VERY unforgiving environment.

Working tirelessly, Al coordinated the commitment of support from 4 Rotary clubs, 1 of them in in Peru, 2 districts and a Foundation Grant. All of this to secure 4 pregnant cows, the start of a dairy herd that will provide long-term sustainability and improved health to the region. Think of that-ALL it took was a Rotarian with a vision and a club to support him. A Rotarian who saw a way to help his "neighbors" in Peru to secure better lives for their families. A Rotarian who didn't let distance, or resources, or language stop him from achieving success in moving our focus on health and international understanding a little further along the road.

These programs and projects are going on around the globe every day, and yet they don't seem to be interesting enough to our news media to even bother to report. But as their number grows, as these projects multiply and their impact grows, THEY will be the reason the world draws closer together and the start point for a better life for millions. And these programs and projects are what sets us aside from other organizations-and they truly define us as Rotarians.

In the Spirit of Rotary,

Dave
