Rotary is a world-wide presence and this global reach has opened our final lane of service and that's International Service. International service is the effort on the part of Rotary clubs everywhere to expand the club's humanitarian reach around the world, and just as important, to promote world understanding and peace. The actual focus can be as broad as everything a club does in the fight to eradicate polio, down to the specifics of how to help Rotary Youth Exchange students adjust to their host countries, and the cultures they'll encounter.

Rotary International also encourages us to work with other organizations. First, of course, is the bi-district relationship with have formed with Matamoros, Mexico. Clubs can also form relationships with other clubs over-seas. Additionally, through agreements held by RI, clubs can also become involved with a wide-ranging set of organizations such as the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the International Reading Association, and the RI/USAID International H2O Collaboration - An alliance between Rotary International and the U.S. Agency for International Development to support and facilitate water and sanitation projects. What an incredible array of things to do to help understand the problems that exist in the world, and what an incredible way to spread the word that we humans are all, at heart, pretty good people.

And finally, there are the Rotary Peace Centers. The Foundation partners with universities around the globe to offer fellowships relating to the pursuit of degrees or certification in conflict prevention or resolution. Just a few of them would include:
  • Duke University and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA
  • International Christian University, Tokyo, Japan
  • Universidad del Salvador, Buenos Aires, Argentina
Regardless of whether it is service within our club, service in our community or our work, even service around the globe, in all of it, writ large, is our Rotary motto, "Service Above Self"!!!

Yours in Rotary,

Dave
