On December 2, we donated 150 cartons of fresh Florida oranges to the Central Illinois Foodbank as part of our annual Citrus Drive. Springfield Sunrise and Springfield Midtown joined with our Club to donate these oranges. Bill Smith, the Citrus Warehouse Manager (image to left), relayed that we added the option for our members and customers to also buy oranges for direct donation to the Central Illinois Foodbank in 2013. This option has grown in popularity, and this year resulted in the donation of 20,000 oranges. Warehouse Czar Bill Smith oversaw the transfer, and Kevin Johnson from Underfanger Mayflower Moving and Storage loaded the three pallets of oranges onto the Foodbank truck with a forklift. The Foodbank will distribute these nutritious oranges to food pantries, soup kitchens, and other venues throughout 21 counties during the holiday season. The proceeds from the purchase of the oranges and grapefruit by our members and customers, including those donated to the Foodbank, will support Rotary community grants that help combat hunger, promote literacy, and meet other needs in our local and global community.
