The last meeting had our District Governor, John Pohl, as our guest speaker.
John mentioned that prior to meeting the day before with President Don, he had accessed our Club’s website and Facebook page to gain some insight into the Club’s activities and ‘public face’. He was pleased with what he saw and reinforced the need for Clubs to ensure that they provided a friendly and Informative portal to Rotary for potential members to access.
John advised that Rotary International is in the process of reviewing and in some instances changing the number of Rotary Districts, and as a result it is likely that some Rotary Districts may be amalgamated with others and all District numbers changed as a result.
John then also discussed the importance of Police checks for all Rotarians associating with vulnerable youth in the course of Rotary projects. He gave the following examples of situations where Rotary members need or don’t need to have current Police checks:
Rotarians who do not involve themselves in any Rotary projects but only attend meetings and adult Rotary functions – do not need to have Police checks done, but this information needs to be reported to the Club Board and noted in Club records
Rotarians working in e.g. sausage sizzles which may involve selling directly to youth under 18 years of age – should get Police checks done to ensure that all risks are covered
Rotarians working on Rotary initiatives like Ryla, Rypen and other similar projects that involve more ongoing contact with youth – must have a Department of Community and Social Inclusion (DCSI) check done.
In all situations it is better for the Club to take a conservative approach and have members arrange for Police Checks to be done, to ensure compliance with Government requirements.
President Don thanked District Governor John for his visit to the Club and for the informative and friendly coffee catch-up with him the day before. Don also reminded members to consider registering for DG John’s upcoming Rotary Convention in Geelong next March.
President’s thought for the week “Communication is a skill that you can learn. It’s like riding a bicycle or typing. If you’re willing to work at it, you can rapidly improve the quality of every part of your life.” Brian Tracy.

(PLEASE NOTE THE CHANGE OF DATE). The format will be very interactive and two of the Pilot Project Clubs will share their story as part of the morning. Membership Summit 2 will be a bonus for those

5. ShelterBox - Mosul City - Iraq
Many displaced families could be forced to seek shelter outside managed camps in a barren and inhospitable landscape at a time of year given to storms and freezing overnight temperatures.
Giving people shelter and essential items such as a solar lamp, blankets and a water carrier will allow them a
degree of dignity and security to rest and recover.’
ShelterBox has recently committed 3,000 lightweight tents for the region, and has a further 3,000 on standby. The first shipment left a few week ago.
ShelterBox is asking its donors to dig deep to provide over £1.75 million more to allow this vital work to continue.
All clubs should consider assisting this cause – now
