Last week’s speaker was Vicky Welgraven, “a proud Adnyamathanha woman from the Northern Flinders Ranges of South Australia. Vicky’s Aboriginal community is Nepabunna nestled in the beautiful Flinders Ranges.” This is an extract from the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women’s Alliance (NATSIWA) website http://natsiwa.org.au/ .
Vicky was recently selected to represent the NATSIWA at the United Nations Commission for the Status of Women in New York, and was one of their keynote speakers on issues surrounding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women. Whilst the emphasis of her speech was on the impact and effects of domestic violence on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, she also discussed the challenges and achievements that shape global standards on gender equality and the empowerment of women.
In her presentation to our Club, Vicky commented that whilst domestic violence against women is a problem across society generally, it is more prevalent in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island communities. The statistics presented by Vicky highlighted the seriousness of the problem, and the urgent need for resources to be applied to tackle the problem.
“Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women are 35 times more likely to need hospital treatment because of domestic violence than other women and they are five times more likely to experience physical violence”. (An extract from the ABC website http://www.abc.net.au/worldtoday/ ).
There are many causes for this situation, but the root of the problem lies in the breakdown of Aboriginal culture through the clash and influence of ‘white’ culture on traditional values.
MS Welgraven was previously recognised for her work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women when SA Governor Hieu Van Le presented her with State Honour Roll recognition at Government House in Adelaide recently.
President’s thought for the week: “Success is not measured by what you accomplish, but by the opposition you have encountered, and the courage with which you have maintained the struggle against overwhelming odds.” Orison Swett Marden

A City Salvos Program
Every Wednesday and Saturday nights during our meal service, we get requests from the homeless for swags and blankets, but due to the long cold winter we had last year we are completely out and in desperate need for more.
They are asking for assistance as they raise funds to purchase more swags.

From a Flight Attendant: "Welcome aboard flight 271 to Port Elizabeth. To operate your seat belt, insert the metal tab into the buckle, and pull tight. It works just like every other seat belt; and, if you don't know how to operate one, you probably shouldn't be out in public unsupervised."
"In the event of a sudden loss of cabin pressure, masks will descend from the ceiling. Stop screaming, grab the mask, and pull it over your face. If you have a small child travelling with you, secure your mask before assisting with theirs. If you are traveling with more than one small child, pick your favourite."
