There was no meeting on Thursday last week as we were celebrating Christmas with our Adelaide City Rotaract Club by enjoying a night out at the Torrensville Lawn Bowling Club.
We had a great night, with good weather, good food, and good company filled with enthusiasm and great effort. For most of us, this was the first time we had attempted lawn bowls, which resulted in some strange bowling and lots of laughs.
Our hosts from the Torrensville Club showed great patience in trying to explain the subtleties of lawn bowling and the basics of game rules.
We were well organised by Julie Campbell and Paige Honor who ensured that everyone was allocated into teams of four players (mixed Rotary and Rotaract) to give us an opportunity to get to know each other.
Julie and Paige also organised a great feed of roast chicken and salads followed by ice cream for dessert.
At the end of the evening, scores were tallied and (with only minor bribery) our Rotary Club was declared the winner and President Don was presented with the inaugural Rotary/Rotaract Sports trophy, which looked remarkably like a ‘genie lamp’. The trophy was engraved and donated by our member, John Karran.
Members also donated presents to the Rotaract Club for presentation to Catherine House for Christmas.
President’s thought for the week, keeping the theme of sport: “I’ve failed over and over again in my life and that is why I succeed.” Michael Jordan

3. Dick Smith Donates $1million
Dick Smith donates $1million for Rotary to continue their work in Australia
Well-known philanthropist Dick Smith has announced his donation of $1 million towards alleviating the suffering of Australians in need.
Dick joins the likes of world-renowned philanthropist Bill Gates as a major supporter of Rotary and its various programs worldwide. Dick highlighted the fact he considers Rotary one of the most trusted and respected charities in the world, and thus his choice to assist him in providing support for Australians suffering personal hardship due to accident, illness or misadventure.
The funds will be distributed via a specific Rotary program developed for the cause, administered by the Rotary Australia Benevolent Society (RABS), with eligibility criteria determined by Dick and Pip Smith.
RABS has previously assisted Wayne Greenhalgh, Sharon Chan and numerous other Australians victimised by domestic violence, disease and poverty.
Rotary Clubs will be responsible for identifying those recognised by their local community who need support, and be willing to match the requested grant on a 50/50 basis.
For the benefit of members, we will aim to give the Duty Roster a few weeks ahead - see below.

A doctor that had been seeing an 80-year-old woman for most of her life finally retired.
At her next checkup, the new doctor told her to bring a list of all the medicines that had been prescribed for her. As the doctor was looking through these his eyes grew wide as he realized Grandma had a prescription for birth control pills.
"Mrs. Smith, do you realize these are birth control pills?"
"Yes, they help me sleep at night."
"Mrs. Smith, I assure you there is absolutely nothing in these that could possibly help you sleep!"
She reached out and patted the young doctor's knee and said, "Yes, dear, I know that. But every morning, I grind one up and mix it in the glass of orange juice that my 16-year-old Granddaughter drinks. And believe me it definitely helps me sleep at night."
