Last week's meeting
Members will recall that we cancelled the meeting at the Naval and Military Club last week. Instead, 20 members and partners "Walked a Mile in my Boots" on Friday morning, 7 August, raising money for the Hutt Street Centre. We walked from Victoria Park along Hutt Street to the SOuth Parklands where we were treated to a cooked breakfast. More on that elsewhere in the Newsletter.
This week's speaker
This week, Gary Locke of the Hutt Street Precinct Association will be our guest speaker. Given that we meet in Hutt Street, it will be good to hear more about our local business community.
Next week's meeting
Julie Campbell has asked me to remind you all that next week's meeting will NOT be at our usual venu.e Our meeting on Thursday 20th August 2015 will be held at the Adelaide Royal Coach Motel,24 Dequetteville Tce., Kent Town at 7am for 7.15am start. $20 includes buffet continental and /or hot breakfast. Some parking is available on site and plenty of parking on north side of Flinders Street.
Good Guys BBQ
Keep those offers of help for our weekend BBQ at the Good Guys coming in to Terry Rodoni. It is vital that we keep the roster full. Terry and Richard are looking at an on-line sign-up system which will enable you to see at a glance where volunteers are needed. We hope to have that under way for the first week in September.
The Rotary Club of Adelaide Light congratulates Ian Riseley, an Australian accountant and member of the Rotary Club of Sandringham, Victoria on his selection as the 2017-18 Rotary president.
Ian H.S. Riseley, of the Rotary Club of Sandringham, Victoria, Australia, is the selection of the Nominating Committee for President of Rotary International in 2017-18.
He will become the president-nominee on 1 October if no other candidates challenge him. Riseley says that meaningful partnerships with corporations and other organizations are crucial to Rotary’s future.
“We have the programs and personnel and others have available resources,” says Riseley. “Doing good in the world is everyone’s goal. We must learn from the experience of the polio eradication program to maximize our public awareness exposure for future partnerships.”
Riseley is a practicing accountant and principal of Ian Riseley and Co., which specializes in advising local and international businesses, and has a strong interest in international affairs. He received the AusAID Peacebuilder Award from the Australian government in 2002 in recognition of his work in Timor-Leste. He also received the Order of Australia medal in 2006 for service to the Australian community.
“Governments see Rotary as positive representatives of a civil society,” he says. “We should work with them to advocate for peace and conflict resolution, just as we are advocating for polio eradication.”
A member since 1978, Riseley has served Rotary as treasurer, director, trustee, RI Board Executive Committee member, task force member, committee member and chair, and district governor.
He is also a former member of the Australian Polio Eradication Private Sector Campaign and a recipient of The Rotary Foundation’s Service Award for a Polio-Free World. He and his wife, Juliet, are Multiple Paul Harris Fellows, Major Donors, and Bequest Society members.
The Hutt Street Centre's "Walk a Mile in My Boots" fundraiser attracted around 3500 walkers for the annual fundraising event on Friday 7 August. The five Rotary Clubs comprising Group 1, all sent walkers who united behind a Rotary Banner while we walked from the old Victoria Park Racecourse site to the South Parklands via Wakefield Street and Hutt Street.
"Walk a Mile in my Boots" is the Hutt Street Centre's official National Homelessness Prevention Week event designed to assist around 6,000 people who experience homelessness in South Australia each year.
Our Club fielded 20 walkers (plus four dogs) and we were pleased to each donate $25 per walker to the cause of helping Adelaide's homeless people to food and shelter that is provided by the Hutt Street Centre.
Thanks to Deborah Wotherspoon for organising our volunteers.

A man enters a barbershop for a shave. While the barber is foaming him up, he mentions the problems he has, getting a close shave around the cheeks. "I have just the thing," says the barber, taking a small wooden ball from a nearby drawer. "Just place this between your cheek and gum." The client places the ball in his mouth and the barber proceeds with the closest shave the man has ever experienced. After a few strokes, the client asks in garbled speech, "And what if I swallow it?" "No problem," says the barber. "Just bring it back tomorrow like everyone else does."
Weight
A wife saw her husband weight himself on the scale trying to pull in the stomach. The wife thought he was trying to reduce his weight on the scale. So she said, "You know, I don't think that will help you." The husband replies, "Of course it helps. It is the only way I can see the number on the scale."
