Last week’s speaker was Dr. Robert Menz, General Practioner, who spoke on mental health issues.
Dr. Menz advised that approximately 13% of his consultations are related to mental health issues and that the largest number of sufferers is in the 35 to 42 years of age group. Also, the majority of patients in this group are women.
He went on to discuss the difference between mental health versus mental illness, emphasizing the need to take care of all aspects of one’s health. This includes, maintaining a reasonable level of physical activity. Keeping mentally active, being socially interactive, and having a spiritual connection.
Dr. Menz mentioned the good work being done by Beyond Blue, which has raised the profile of Mental Health, and is reducing the stigma associated with mental health illness.
The key to treating mental issues is in getting the sufferers to admit that they have a problem and to seek help as soon as possible. Unfortunately, society has taken too long to accept mental illness as a ‘normal’ part of societies’ health problems, like any other illness. Treatment includes cognitive behavioral therapy which is now available on-line and is almost as effective as face-to-face treatment.
The meeting included the presentation, by Angus Tuck, of a certificate of partnership with the Rotary Club of Bogota Suba for our Club’s support and sponsorship of their job-training program for young men and women living in the Miramar Sector of Suba, Colombia. (see below)

Today's riddle for seniors... Here is the situation:
You are on a horse, galloping at a constant speed.
On your right side is a sharp drop-off.
On your left side is an elephant travelling at the same speed as you.
Directly in front of you is a galloping kangaroo and your horse is unable to overtake it.
Behind you is a lion running at the same speed as you and the kangaroo.
What must you do to get out of this highly dangerous situation?
Answer........
Get off the merry-go-round and go home, you silly old B.!
