ShelterBox is assessing the need to respond to mudslides and flooding in Sri Lanka.
We flew out 1st June to assist the Sri Lankan Government led relief efforts, work with partner charities and local Rotary Clubs, and to make urgent plans to help local families and communities recover.
Our work responding in Sri Lanka last year means we have the best possible experience in how to level and drain sites on the island, and we’ll be working with partners and the Sri Lanka government to share our expertise.
The situation
The floods in Sri Lanka are the worst in 14 years after record rainfall in the southwest and it hasn’t stopped yet. Monsoon rains are still falling, and many rivers are still overflowing.
Up to half a million people have been affected and around 85,000 have been made homeless.
The Sri Lankan government has appealed to the United Nations for help with rescue and relief.
Our response in Sri Lanka in 2016
Last year ShelterBox responded to flooding in Sri Lanka, and worked in partnership with the Rotary Club of Capital City in Colombo, who provided invaluable in‐country local knowledge from a network of Rotarians across the island, and with the International Organisation for Migration and World Vision.
ShelterBox provided tents and other aid to hundreds of families across six different camps. The work was complex because land had to be levelled and drained before it could be used safely for pitches, ensuring occupants wouldn’t be at risk from further storms and flooding.
2. Wine Lunch
The Adelaide Rotary Club are organizing a wine lunch at the Caledonian Hotel North Adelaide.
- Heartland wine lunch Sunday August 20th 12.00 for 12.30
The cost is $90 a head of which each club makes $20 from each ticket sold.
There are generally up to 6 courses and 12 different wines served. and there is also an opportunity to purchase wines at very good savings from which each club also gets a small return.
3. Calperum and Riseley Forest
Since the launch of the RISELEY FOREST a month ago, seven Clubs within D9500 / D9520 have already made a commitment to honour Ian Riseley's challenge to plant a tree for every Rotarian in the world. For just $5 per Rotarian in your Club you can be part of the RISELEY FOREST @ CALPERUM.
We already have commitment from just seven Clubs to plant 900 trees, with some Clubs seeking to plant 5 or more trees for every member.
It is now the aim of the Calperum Committee to be able to communicate to incoming RI President that our two Districts have already exceeded his target before the end of June this year, enabling him to promote our achievement as he travels around the world. What better way would there be to promote Rotary Australia's biggest environmental project on the world stage.
Clubs are encouraged to embrace the concept, and return their commitment sheet to the Calperum Committee on or before 20th June.
Thank you in anticipation
Calperum Committee
