Welcome to 2017! We're looking forward to another year of doing good in our community and the world. Our service trip to Nicaragua is in early January -- fact-finding to see how our club can help with a water project for people in need. You'll hear more about the trip next week.
This Friday's program is a change from originally announced. We'll have a presentation on the Firefighting 747 Supertanker based at the COS Airport. Capt Bob Soelberg, Sr. VP and Program Manager for Global SuperTanker Services will join us on Friday. Our club has committed to hosting another Rotary Youth Exchange student for 2017-18. The Nikolaus family will welcome back daughter Annie from her year as an exchange student in Germany sponsored by our club. The Nikolaus family contacted us recently and said they would like to host an inbound student in the coming year. Annie will be home for her senior year at Discovery Canyon and thought it would be a great idea to host again when she's at home. This works out well for District 5470 as they are short on clubs to sponsor outbound/inbound students in the coming year.
We've bid farewell to a number of members since our Rotary year started on July 1st, but have added more than we've lost.
One of the long-standing traditions of our club is supporting the El Paso County Mock Trial Competition with volunteer judges. High school students have been training for the event since September. This year's competition is Friday, February 3rd (one afternoon session right after Rotary), and Saturday, February 4th (one morning and one afternoon session). What a great opportunity to give some of your time to watch today's youth in action. Sign-up sheets are available throughout January. Looking for a "Service Above Self" opportunity -- this is it!
News from the district that they will match your donation to Polio Plus with a district-wide cap of $100,000 in total donations. So, all of this counts towards your quest towards your first or follow-on Paul Harris Fellowship. Here's how it works -- your donation to Polio plus - our club matches -- district matches your donation -- total donation to Polio Plus then is matched two for one by the Gates Foundation. To ensure you receive 2016 tax credit, the best option is to make your donation on line at www.rotary.org -- log into My Rotary and select Give. Make your choice Polio Plus and your donation can multiply to do a lot of good in the world.
