We welcomed District Governor Teresa Anson to our club as our main speaker on Friday.  DG Teresa visited the club with her husband, fellow Rotarian Cliff Anson, and shared news of what's going on in Rotary such as the Atlanta 2017 Rotary International Convention coming up in June 2017.  This is a year for celebration in Rotary -- the long-overdue admission of women as Rotarians took place 30 years ago -- our club needs to celebrate that and share the news with the community.  The Rotary Foundation is 100 years old in the coming year -- "We're this close to eliminating polio in the world."  Celebrate this 100 year anniversary with an increase in your Foundation giving of at least $26.50, the initial donation 100 years ago that started this $1.5B quest to serve the world.

Our district also has great training opportunities for all Rotarians.  On the immediate horizon are Fall courses from the Rotary Leadership Institute to take place next month on Sept 23rd and 24th at the Rockrimmon Library -- follow this link to the district website page for more information http://rotary5470.org/Stories/summer-and-fall-courses-offered-by-district-5470

She shared a fun opportunity coming up for Rotarians and friends - a one-week Alaskan Cruise on July 14, 2017 -- follow this link for more info

It's always great to have a visit with the District Governor -- we wish DG Teresa best wishes for the coming year of travel to 58 clubs in the district.

What a great day we had at our last meeting when District Governor Teresa Anson presented Jourdan McGinn with a $30,000 Global Grant Scholarship.  Jourdan joins a unique group of almost 40,000 Ambassadorial and Global Grant Scholars who the Rotary Foundation has supported for international study since 1947.  Jourdan shared with us her inspiring story of work in Uganda and Kenya providing care for those in need.  This experience has centered her attention on the Maternal & Child Health Rotary Area of Focus.  The Global Grant Scholarship is funded by your donations to the Rotary Foundation with half of the funds from District Designated Funds and the rest from the Rotary Foundation.  With the scholarship, Jourdan will study starting in late September for a year at The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, pursuing a Master's in Public Health.

Jourdan also received her first Paul Harris Fellowship courtesy of a donation of Foundation Recognition Points from Past-District Governor Jim Mundt.

Jourdan, an Air Academy High School 2008 graduate, pursued her undergraduate studies at the University of Seattle.  In three short years, she earned her B.A. in Communication Studies graduating Summa Cum Laude.  In 2012, she went to Uganda as a Global Health Corps Fellow.   Since 2013, she has been working for One Acre Fund in Kenya.  Take a look at the following link for information on her work with that organization.

(As an aside, I mentioned at the meeting that Liz and I will be in London right after Thanksgiving for a week and already have plans to meet Jourdan for dinner -- if you're travelling to London, please let me know and I'll get you contact information for Jourdan)

9th Annual Flight Gala & Auction
9th Annual FLIGHT Gala and Auction

Having been part of the Rotarian Family for just over a year has been inspiring and compelling. To be surrounded on a weekly basis with a group of people whose mission it is to impact humanity locally and internationally is profound. That being said, it is an honor to be involved on this year's Flight Committee where our local chapter of Rotary will strive to make a difference in School District 11. With the commitment from fellow Rotarians, local leaders and the community, last year The Rotary Club of Colorado Springs, through the Flight Gala, was able to raise over $100k and provide grants to District 11 and our Club Service Fund, including funding a purchase for green screen technology for Palmer High School.

This year at the Gala, in addition to the Butterfly Auction and Silent Auction, we will be offering a Wine Pull. This is a fun opportunity to help us raise additional funds. If you are not familiar with a wine pull, the idea is to donate $20 and draw from a barrel of wine corks to win a fabulous bottle of wine. To make this fundraiser possible, we need your help! The Committee is asking that if possible, each Rotarian contribute a bottle of wine for the Pull; with a value of $20 or more. Any donations are welcomed and greatly appreciated. Please bring all contributions to the Friday club lunch.

In advance, we as a committee want to thank you for making this year's Flight a huge success!
