KEARNEY — Connie Francis remembers spending a week in quarantine after being diagnosed with polio at age 10. The Kearney resident recently went to Delhi, India, to help immunize children with the polio vaccine in hopes that none of these kids will have to go through what she did, or worse.

“You do what you can to make a change in some little part of the world,” said Francis, a retired University of Nebraska at Lincoln Extension educator. Francis was part of a group of eight Rotary members from throughout the state that went to India on Feb. 20 for the February National Immunization Day.

After presenting the program at a Kearney Dawn Rotary Club meeting, Kearney Public Library Director, Matt Williams, was asked what the Dawn Rotary Club could do to help support the efforts of the library.

After a brief moment of deep contemplation, Matt replied "we would really like a commercial type popcorn popper." Adding, "it would be really nice to have fresh popcorn at our movie nights."

3rd Grade Students in Buffalo County receive scholastic dictionary

KEARNEY, NE – The Kearney Dawn Rotary Club has completed the 7th annual Dictionary Project, distributing scholastic dictionaries to every 3rd grade student in Buffalo County.

Roxanne Talbitzer, 3rd grade teacher at Shelton may have said it best stating, “In this age of technology, more and more students prefer to just type the word onto a word document and use auto correct instead of looking up a word.  Third grade is the perfect age to introduce students to all the various uses and value of a dictionary.  Thank you so very much for your interest in the education of our students and encouraging students to use dictionaries, and for the service you provide!”
