Youth Center +
Scholarships
What a busy meeting. After we introduced our guests (including Mary Fricke and Mark Puelo, a Rotarian from South Placer), we presented a check for $5,000 to Emmaus Church Community. Nate Oats and Sandie Haskins accepted the check and said that this will enable them to get the matching grant that will start the Youth Center in August. They already have the facility at 420 Lincoln Blvd essentially furnished and the Axiom sign is on the door. See their website www.TheAxiom. Axiom means "an assumed truth" and this is that the kids of this community matter.
Whew! - lots going on this week - see separate stories and pictures for Tour de Lincoln and Relay for Life. In addition, Joann Hilton, Dick Fowler, Frank Neves and Debbie Brown will be guest chefs at The Fruitvale School BBQ fundraiser Sunday evening.
Last week we had a Rotary Work Day at the Salt Mine and also delivered thankfully-accepted supplies for the homeless to Clay City Church after the meeting last week. Kim and Paul reported that our $3,000 to ShelterBox was matched by another Rotarian donor somewhere in the world, so our donation created a lot of bang for the buck. Paul also described the consequences of the subsequent earthquake in Nepal, where the area is so remote that the ShelterBoxes are difficult to deliver.
Vic, our Raffle guy, won the raffle but no Ace of Spades. Better luck next time Vic.
Our speaker was Chet Winton, a professor-emeritis from San Jose State. He spoke about the various ways that children can become caretakers for their parents. When this occurs, the children become parent to their parents or siblings. There are many consequences for these children as they grow up, that make it difficult for them to let go and have fun due to the early-age responsibilities.
After the meeting, we had Book Buddies. Then in the evening, Kris and Art went to Lincoln High School to present our $1,000 scholarships to deserving students, including
- Vocational Scholarship
- Community Service Scholarship
- Outstanding Girl
- Outstanding Boy
- Two 4-yr Bradford Scholarships in Engineering
