Rotary Four Way Speech Contest

The Rotary Club of Nashua West in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Nashua recently sponsored our annual Four Way Test Speech contest. This competition offers high school students an opportunity to compete by delivering original speeches, five to seven minutes in length, on a variety of topics. These topics should be of current interest and use concepts which encompass elements from the Rotary Four Way Test in the body of their speech.

The Four Way Test was written in 1932 at the height of the Great Depression by Herbert J. Taylor, a Chicago Rotarian who later became President of Rotary International (1954-55). It was used by Taylor as a basis in determining ethical decisions at a company which was on the verge of bankruptcy. This 24-word test enabled his employees to change the direction of the company and has been credited with having saved the company. The Four Way Test was adopted by Rotary International in 1943 and has been translated into more than a hundred different languages.

HATS AND MITTENS!
Thank you Rotary Family!

Nashua Rotary West Hats and Mittens Project for the Nashua School System
Another Successful Year!
Brrrr!  These time of year, wintry weather and snow sends everyone to dig out their winter gear. Parents spend extra time in the morning making sure that their children are bundled off to school with adequate protection against the elements.  But not all families in our community are able to provide their children with hats and mittens to help keep them safe from the cold.  That's where Nashua Rotary West comes in.  For more than 5 years,  members of this community service group have allocated funds they raised, supplemented by their personal donations, to help outfit children in preschool through high school with winter gear.

Another Successful Ribfest

The 2018 Father's day weekend hosted another successful Ribfest.
Here's an article from WRUR:

Thousands enjoy barbecue, entertainment at Rock'n Ribfest

MERRIMACK, N.H. —

Rock’n Ribfest in Merrimack draws huge crowds hungry for barbecue every year, but for the first time, this year’s festivalgoers also saw a couple say, “I do.”

For regular Ribfest-goers, the food, drink and entertainment are the main draw.

“Love it,” said Nashua resident Donna Marshall, who was among the thousands at the event at the Anheuser-Busch brewery. “Gets better every year.”

“The weather's always good,” said Brittany Bellew, of Londonderry. “The band's great. It's really fun.”

“We had a great time and we're just enjoying the food and the beer here,” said Rebecca Howard, of Manchester. “It's a good time.”

People said the wait in line was worth it to eat some of the best barbecue in New Hampshire.

“Ribs, chicken, potato salad – I like trying all the different rib shacks every time I come, and they've all been good so far,” Laurie Bachelder, of Nashua.

Frank and Christine Cantwell have been attending Ribfest together for eight years, and love it so much, they decided to get married at the event.

“We don't want to do a traditional wedding,” Frank said. “We don't want all the thrills. We want to do something interesting and different. She said, ‘What about Ribfest?’ That's great. They've got everything here – ribs, music.”

A small wedding with family, friends and their favorite food is all they needed.

“I don't feel 1 ounce of stress,” Frank said. “I feel great.”

For others at Ribfest Sunday, it was the perfect way to spend Father’s Day.

“Food and beer – what more can you ask for?” said Merrimack resident Scott Saucier.

30 Years of Women in Rotary

One of the highlights of this year’s District Conference in Burlington on June 1, 2 and 3 was the chance to meet Dr.
Sylvia Whitlock and hear her story about how women became eligible to join Rotary.  She was on the front lines of the battle
with Rotary International back in the 1980's.  She went on to become the President of her Rotary Club and then became the first woman District Governor in Rotary.  Without Dr.
Whitlock and her colleagues’ willingness to take on RI there is absolutely no question that Rotary would not be the dynamic worldwide organization that it is today.  Come to
Burlington to hear her story first hand.

Greetings from the district governor

Well, we are off and running for the new year.  I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable holiday season.  I am sure that the bitter cold weather has been a challenge for many of us, even for us old timers who have been through many northern New England winters.   Since my last newsletter Mary and I have had the honor of visiting several of the clubs in our area for special events.  Because of the driving conditions we have not ventured too far from home.  We did manage to get over the hill to Ludlow to join them at their holiday celebration dinner.  I also made to White River Rotary Christmas luncheon and we made it to the Charlestown Rotary dinner.  We had a great time, as always, and really enjoyed the time we were able to spend with our fellow Rotarians.  Over the course of the next month I am scheduled to do a “Rotary Cares” television spot in Brattleboro, visit the Brattleboro Rotary Club; we will be joining the Bellows Falls club for a special meeting and going to Manchester NH for a fund raising event with the Queen City Rotary Club.  Those are just the ones I know about right now, but I am sure that more will come up.  I have been working hard with my District Conference Committee and coordinating with the District 7980 Committee pulling together the Joint District Conference scheduled for Burlington on June 1, 2 and 3.  We have two
dynamic speakers lined up.  More about them in later newsletters.  By the time you read this the registration will have gone live and I hope that you go on our District website and get signed up
for the conference.

On January 22nd, our District Visioning team is scheduled to do a visioning exercise with the Windsor Rotary Club.  I have personally been involved with Visioning exercises with four clubs
in the District as a member of the Visioning team.  I am looking forward to participating in this next one as a member of my own club.  If your club has not done a Visioning you should
really consider doing one.  It is a great way for a club to focus on what is important to the club and its members to make their communities a better place to live.  Please be well and be safe out there.

How West Side Story Got Its Name
by
Charter Members: Joel Saren, President #5, and David B. Fite

When Rotary West began we were mostly young business leaders in the Nashua community. Very quickly we all became good friends.  Our wives also became close friends.  At Rotary West events, it was like a family event without the family turmoil (LOL).

Members and wives all participated in all the events.  We played co-ed softball games against the Old Man’s Club (Nashua Rotary).  We also played softball men vs women.  Women won.  Men had to bat opposite.  (If you were righty, you had to bat lefty.)  We had Rotary West t-shirts for all.  Even some of our kids played in the game.  I recall that Dr. Robin Guthrie, (OBGYN) played and so did his wife, Mae as well as his son.  We enjoyed each other’s company very much.  We socialized with other Rotary West members.   We even chartered a bus to take us all to the Boston Garden to see the Celtics.  Members, wives, children and friends came.

I remember on the drive to Boston, I sat next to (Charter member) Paul Munroe.  I didn’t know Paul all that well, except that he worked for 1590 Broadcaster and WSMN radio.  During the drive Paul and I chatted about all types of things.  I asked Paul about where he was before he came to Nashua.  Paul began to reveal his background and time in Hollywood, California.

He told me that he had worked on many early TV shows: Specifically the Morey Amsterdam Show, and the Jerry Lester Show.  He shared stories about many Hollywood stars, I had only read about.  Hearing about his background was amazing and so interesting.  The bus ride ended too soon as we talked about his time in Hollywood and the people he knew, the TV shows he was involved with, and the plays and movies he collaborated on.   At some point Paul just stopped recalling those days and said, “You know Joel,” West Side Story” would be a good name for our newsletter.   So Paul should get the credit for coming up with the name “West Side Story.”  The name “West Side Story” has survived the test of time.

Prior to the wonderful and appropriate name “West Side Story” we had experimented with other chided names.  At first we tried to tease the Nashua Rotary and their newsletter – “SMILE” so we called our first newsletter “SMIRK.”  Eventually, our Board of Directors approved the name “West Side Story.”  That’s how our West Side Story got its name.

Footnote about Paul Munroe.  Paul had his degree in engineering, but that was not readily known.  At some point he left his job at WSMN and took a job SWEEPING FLOORS at Nashua Corporation from midnight to 8am.  Paul told me that one day, one of the Nashua Corporation owners was walking the shop floor and saw fellow Rotarian Paul sweeping the floor !!!!   Mr. Carter (Nashua Rotary) asked Paul why he was there sweeping floors.  Paul said he needed a job.  Mr. Carter put Paul to work in his field of study as an engineer.
