Fellow Rotarians and Friends of the Monadnock Rotary Club

Our speaker for the week of February 21, 2016, was Major Hank Colby who is Director of Programs for the Cheshire County Department of Corrections.  Major Colby opened his talk by stating the Agencies goal as " Our department's prime goal is the operation of a safe, humane facility that provides programs and services that afford inmates opportunities for positive change."  He went on to say that the "jail's" top priority is to "protect society by preventing escape from custody through the establishment of suitable physical and procedural safeguards".  To this end, the facility incorporates many innovative features from its architectural design, which is open, light and inviting to the respectful manner is which inmates are treated and handled.

The jail is also unique in that it provide numerous opportunities for training and treatment programs, including academic and counseling programs that offer inmates the opportunity for positive personal change.  The programs range from G.E.D./Educational Tutoring to Dog Therapy which is a program with a dog and her handler who talks about the care and training of dogs.  Major Colby indicated that many of the programs are taught by volunteers from the community including our own John Goodhue.  Major Colby concluded by issuing an open invitation to anyone who would like to take a tour of the facility.

Our next meeting will be March 1, 2016, at the Dublin Community Church starting at 7:30 AM.  Our speaker will be Roy Schlieben who will talk about the new "Makerspace" that is located in Peterborough.  Rob Harris has the hat and John Goodhue has the Invocation.
