2013 DeMar Kid’s Marathon Program is in Full Swing

 

 

The 2013 Keene Elm City Rotary Club’s Kid’s DeMar Marathon will be bigger and better than with more than 700 children from 25 area elementary schools already registered. That’s almost twice as many kids compared with last year.

 

The DeMar Kid’s Marathon is a cooperative effort that brings together many Healthy Monadnock 2020 Organizational Champions including the Keene Elm City Rotary Club, the Advocates for Healthy Youth (AFHY) Coalition, Cheshire Medical Center/Dartmouth-Hitchcock Keene and the Cheshire Health Foundation, MoCo Arts, the Keene Family YMCA, the City of Keene Parks and Recreation Department, and Beeze Tees.  Together these organizations hope to increase opportunities for physical activity and enhance the health and wellbeing of our region’s children.

 

Running or walking in the DeMar Kid’s Marathon is free and simple.  But, we depend on the help and enthusiasm of PE teachers and other school staff volunteers to coordinate this effort for their schools.  For 2013 all Cheshire County elementary schools were invited to participate and 25 schools are on board this year!

 

Students who have completed and turned in a signed registration are now completing their activity log for recording 25 miles during the spring and summer leading up to the DeMar on September 29, 2013.  By completing the log (kid’s can fill up more than one if they’re super active!) and returning it when school resumes in the fall (no later than September 13th 2013) the students will receive a free t-shirt and earn the right to run the last 1.2 miles of the DeMar Marathon on race day.  Wearing their T-shirt will be their “admission ticket” to the 1.2 mile run. Participants will also receive a finishers’ medal at the finish line at Keene State College and a special free gift.  Parents are welcome to run or walk the 1.2 miles with their youngsters, too. 

 

Any adult 2013 Clarence DeMar Marathon runner from outside of Cheshire County who would like their child to participate in the 2013 Kid’s DeMar program can email us at kidsdemarmarathon@gmail.com to learn how to register.  Families in Cheshire County who home school their children can also email the Kid’s DeMar to register their youngster.

 

The Kid’s DeMar is an annual event with participation expected to grow each year.
