RCHP turns out in force for visit by District Governor Sam Camporeale

With a wonderful show of strength 16 members of RCHP attended meeting 1722 on 05Oct16 at The Goody to share an enlightening evening with District Governor Sam Camporeale, his wife Lee and Assistant DG Tim Klar.

DG Sam's message to the meeting was primarily about The Rotary Foundation Centenary and the incredible achievements that have improved living standards for underprivileged people all over the globe through 100 years of unheralded service. 2017 is the Centenary Year for The Rotary Foundation and we have much to celebrate. We were shown a specially produced short centenary movie that Fox cinemas, in support of the work of the Foundation, will show in all of their cinemas on the 100th anniversary of the birth of the Foundation, Feb 23rd 2017. We were tasked with the challenge of taking any opportunity we can find to promote Rotary at that time and to consider ways to use the celebration for community projects.

The Foundation has provided over $3billion in it's 100 years for projects such as the eradication of polio, which is now only presenting in Pakistan and Central Africa. The goal of a polio free world has almost been achieved with only 44 cases reported in 2015 and 26 cases in 2016.

Another project is ROMAC (Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children), which provides aid for children with cranio-fascial deformities by home hosting participants while they undergo reconstructive surgery. It is worthy of note that RCHP was very actively involved with the cranio-facial unit at Flinders Hospital in setting up the fore-runner to the ROMAC program.

With a portfolio of International scholarships for peace studies, provision of clean water and many other beneficial projects, The Rotary Foundation is doing good in the world. Foundation grants are available for projects identified by clubs, even at a local level.

The future of ROTARY looks promising thanks to the renaissance work done by the Council on Legislation Changes considering and allowing changes to Rotary constitutions that promote flexibility, relevance & service in the rapidly changing life styles of today. Rotary is first and foremost a service organisation and our meetings should really only be social events for members to get to know each other and plan that service.

Lee Camporeale rounded out the guest speaker part of the meeting giving us an indication of the importance placed on the work of The Rotary Foundation by others. If the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation proudly supports The Rotary Foundation it must be worth while. But support doesn't only come from those who incredible wealth. We can all be part of the on-going success story by contributing any amount, small or large. Just $2/week is recognised as a Centurion Donor.

In finishing we were encouraged to attend the next District Conference to be held in Mt Gambier over the week end of April 27-30 2017.

President Mike McAuliffe thanked DG Sam, his wife Lee and ADG Tim and reiterated that RCHP is Service Club that has fun.

Jim Handley won the raffle for a bottle of wine.
