Happy New Year ladies and gentlemen, as the year begins let me start by thanking you for a great first half of my Rotary year, we have come a long way but far from done, this is our time to shine even more.

The beginning of the year is were we start focusing on our youth, from visiting the interact club at Buena High School to RYLA, and our International projects in Nicaragua to our Rotary cruise to Mexico, and finishing the year in June with our scholarship give away to many deserving students in the area.

We are staring the year with incredible speaker, Ventura Chief of Police Ken Corney, invite friends and potential new Rotarians.

"All your dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them."
                                                                                                                                   Walt Disney
Happy New Year
Stories
Meeting December 22, 2016
President Husam led us in the Flag Salute.

President Husam then "Inspired" us by reminding us how amazing the Joint Christmas Party was. It was a great event and so fun to see fellow Rotarians that we only get together with once or twice a year.

President Husam then thanked Michelle Cekov for taking attendance.

Rich Stewart auctioned off a basket that Bob & Wendy Pazen won at the Christmas Party. President Husam bought it for $100.

President Husam introduced Marco Vasquez, a guest of Bob Pazen, to tell us a little bit about himself. Marco is a patient of Bob Pazen and a RYLA graduate. Marco just learned that he has received a full ride scholarship to Stanford! Marco grew up in Colonia in Oxnard and focused on his education because he didn't want to go the way of other people he grew up with. Many of the kids Marco grew up with got involved with gangs and are into drugs. Marco received his scholarship through National Scholarship Match.

Bob Lynn gave our Inspirational Message followed by Bob Pazen who gave our joke of the week.

Bill Spellman spoke about Interact at Buena and how we desperately need a Rotarian advisor to help Natalie with the program. We do not have any candidates for RYLA this year and the Interact club is down to about 10 students.
RCVE Supporting our military families for the holidays.
During the holiday season our Rotary Club of Ventura-East helped support three military families in Ventura County. Sara Masterson shopped for our first family which included two boys ages 1 and 7 and a 10 year old girl.  Amber Stevens shopped for our second family with four children, three boys ages 5, 12 and 15 and a 4 year old girl. My daughters and I shopped for our third family which was comprised of the mom (being deployed in January), the grandmother and a four year old boy.

We took the gifts (all marked) to the Ventura County Military Collaborative on December 17, 2016 and there was a line of children and their families outside. A large conference room had been arranged with donations for many organizations. Our gifts were provided directly to our three families. Kim Davis, the Executive Director, said the grandmother cried when she saw the gifts for one of our families. All of our families were very appreciative of our efforts.

I would like to thank all those in the club that helped support this project for our military families this year including the following: Jim Emch, Harriet Clune, Tom Harshbarger, Bob Lynn, Jeff Burgh, Tim Blackwell, Ron Polito, Husam Hishmeh, Bill Spellman, Wendy Pazen, Bob Pazen, Bill Crookston, Greg Frye, Carol Marquez, Judy Hoag, Todd Juvonen, Amber Stevens and Sara Masterson.

News about the Rotary Cruise
Wow!
We already have a fun group of 12 couples signed up for our first ever Ventura Rotary Cruise March 9th.  Best news?  There are plenty  of reserved staterooms for more!  This 4 day "Bash and Splash" party will kick off from SAN PEDRO on Thursday, March 9th with stops in CATALINA and ENSENADA.

Many Rotarians are taking family and friends with them.  What a great way to show off Rotary's congeniality.  "Good deeds AND good times".

Besides the plentiful activities and entertainment provided by our luxurious Princess Star, Capt'n Cruise (AKA John Masterson) has added group only excitements like a Rotary scavenger hunt, keroake contest and cocktail parties.

We have veranda staterooms (category BC) still available for a total price of $895 pp.  This includes all activities, PLUS Port fees, taxes, document charges, crew gratuities and transportation to and from SAN Pedro.

Don't miss the fun. Sign up today.  December 18th is our final deadline!

Ask your friends or other Rotarians to join us!
News from Rotary International
Welcome to the latest edition of SEEDS. The January 2017 edition is now available for viewing or downloading. In this edition we focus on three projects Club's have done to give 'value' to our membership. Yep, that's why I guess we do it ! Please take a moment to be inspired by what our clubs and their members are doing in the past and in the future.
The outcomes are remarkable! ENJOY

Wishing fellow Rotarians a year filled with Friendship & Happiness

Membership has been the focus of Rotary the last couple years - by getting involved with a local Youth Centre, we can help guide and shape the next generation of potential Rotarians.
The front page of August's Seeds capture this transition perfectly.

In the aftermath of the Black Saturday Bushfires, Rotary International raised funds to support community recovery. Through this effort, the Ellimatta Youth Space was established for the Kinglake community as a dedicated facility for the youth. It was proudly opened by RI President Ray Klinginsmith and many Rotrians, Rotary District Governors, past and present who had worked to support our community recovery attended.
And to look after this Rotary gifted asset - 2 Rotarians are part of Ellimatta Board of Management.

With increasing family breakdowns, drugs and alcohol abuse and disengagement - youth centers have the facilities, support and contacts to assist them thru to adulthood.

Our club received this Christmas card from our local Youth Centre, Ellimatta Inc. - heartwarming to be appreciated.
