We are happy to announce that our incoming Rotary International President Ravi Ravindran has agreed to serve as our Keynote Speaker at our District’s Annual Rotary Foundation Gala. It continues to be our District’s tradition to honor and recognize not only our generous donors, but also the many beneficiaries of our gifts to The Rotary Foundation each year. This year we will come together in celebration at the beautiful Reagan Library on Friday, January 30th. The event will coincide with the ever popular and meaningful STEPS Conference to be held on Saturday, January 31st. More information on each event is forthcoming. We hope each club will reserve a table for 8 that evening and consider sponsoring Interactors and/or Rotaractors to help expand their view of Rotary. Lastly, I would personally love to chat with you about some special opportunities available to you in support of the Rotary Foundation. One, is to become a Major Donor today, simply by spreading out your gift over a 3-year period. What can be better than that! In addition, there are many ways you might consider a significant legacy gift that will be beneficial to you and will ultimately “DO GOOD IN THE WORLD”. When you become a new Major Donor or a Bequest Society Member or when you consider the next level you will be personally recognized by RI President Ravi that evening with beautiful recognition crystals and pins for your generous support. Please call or email me for discount reservation codes on tables of 8 or more . My contact info is: Telephone: 805-238-4264 or rotarybrenda@gmail.com. Yours in Rotary service, Brenda Cressey, Endowment and Major Gift Chair RI District 5240 and RI Zone 26 |

STEPS (Steps to Eliminate Poverty Sustainably) STEPS 2015 – Make a difference in your own backyard! We will focus on successful, sustainable local projects benefiting members of our own communities, with financial help from international partnerships and the Rotary Foundation. While all concepts presented at STEPS in previous years have applied to projects abroad and at home, at STEPS 2015, we will showcase exciting projects benefiting our part of the world! This cutting edge day will provide you the tools and connections for starting new projects and partnerships both in your own back yard and globally. Our Keynote speakers will inspire you to discover terrific opportunities to break the cycles of poverty (economic, educational, health…) in our own communities. Our breakout speakers will emphasize the importance of needs assessment, the planning process, and discuss proven strategies for successful projects. Attendees will leave with the inspiration and ability to help guide their own Rotary clubs to initiate, plan and implement sustainable community-based projects. |

Economic Growth and Sustainability: Systems Thinking for a Complex World
May 06, 2015
The Rotary Club of China Lake is proud to be hosting Dr. Karen Higgins as the speaker at our lunch meeting next week. Dr. Karen Higgins has written a book that was inspired by her grandkids. She realizes that they will inherit the world and they will have to deal with the consequences of choices today. She has read a lot of literature on specific problems and used system theory to tie them all together. And the result was her second published book, "Economic Growth and Sustainability: Systems Thinking for a Complex World," that was released in November. Her goal is that the book will help build a conversation and get us to work together to create a more sustainable, interconnected planet. Club members will remember that Dr. Karen Higgins was the Executive Director of Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division prior to her retirement. Dr. Higgins looked at various resources and the impact they have on each other. She examined the individual elements of national economies, economic growth, the global economy, population, pollution, fuel consumption and many more and tied them together with system theory. Dr. Higgins was interviewed about her new book In a January 2015 article in the Daily Independent. According to the article, "Higgins applied systems thinking to the problems of the world. 'Systems thinking theory says that if you draw a map or a diagram you can find places where there's leverage, where little actions have big results and that's what I'm looking for,' she said. 'So I tried to put together a map that sort of expresses that big picture look so that you can actually find little points at which you can make a difference,' she said. Higgins said her book contains data substantiating 'why things are tied together, and then at the end I made suggestions about what could we do, both as individuals and as collectives.'” |

The Club Assembly is Wednesday, May 27th at 6:30pm at Rick and Tammy Ferris' home. This is the annual club business meeting. We will be voting to approve the club continuing resolutions for 2015-16, the 2015-16 club budget and PE Bill Brown will be outlining the plans for the upcoming Rotary year. Spouses are invited to this important meeting. The club lunch meeting will be dark on the 27th and will not meet for lunch that day. To order food for the Assembly, Club Service Director Mary Meyer-Lundstrum needs to know how many members and spouses plan to attend. We need a quorum at this event in order to vote to approve the 2015-16 resolutions and budget. Remember, part of the resolutions will include the proposed change to the dues structure. If you are unable to attend, contact Club Secretary Rick Ferris about giving your proxy to another member. RSVP to marylundstrom@verizon.net.
