Ziggy Siegfried, Athletic Director of CSUB Division 1 sports programs gave us a presentation highlighting the importance of scholarship funding.
Student athlete Audrey Willoughby, on the women's swim team, shared her personal story of what it's like being a Cal State student athlete.
Athletic scholarships are entirely funded by college raised monies. Not by state money.
There's a direct correlation to the amount of scholarship money available for each sport and the competitive success of that team.
Fun Fact: Despite the fact the Men's softball team was one of the least scholarship funded teams in the league, they won the 2015/2016 Division One title.
Ziggy stressed the four pillars on which the CSUB Athletic Department is built:
Provide academic excellence
Provide an outstanding student athlete experience
Pursue competitive sucess
Engage Bakersfield community
Zig discussed the new Kesley Center for Student Success, a 10,000 sq. ft. sports facility.
There are currently 325 student athletes at CSUB.
During the Q&A, rotarian George Grange asked why CSUB doesn't have football team. (Zig gets this question a lot) The answer being is that it takes about $300 million to field a division 1 team, and as soon as a donor steps forward, CSUB will have a football team. Any takers?
