You're more powerful than you think: a citizen's guide to making change happen
November 14 at noon
The Westin, 1900 5th Ave.
This is an age of epic political turbulence in America. Old hierarchies and institutions are collapsing. All the “givens” of civic life are no longer given. From the fracturing of the major political parties to the spread of bottom-up movements like Black Lives Matter and $15 Now, citizens across the country and across the political spectrum are reclaiming power. It is no longer the exclusive domain of CEOs, political elites, and insiders from either political party. And the questions today’s rising citizens face: Are you ready? Do you understand power? And if you want to make change in the world, do you know how?
This is the message of Eric Liu’s latest book, You’re More Powerful Than You Think: A Citizen’s Guide to Making Change Happen. A former speechwriter and policy advisor to President Bill Clinton, a regular columnist for CNN.com, and the founder & CEO of Citizen University, Eric leads a movement to foster responsible and empowered citizenship through activation, communication, and education.
Our featured speaker on this crisp and clear fall day was Lewis Rudd, the co-founder of Ezell’s Famous Chicken. He was introduced by Skip Rowland, who delivered a passionate and heartfelt introduction for an extraordinary and determined man.
Skip said he was honored to be “part of this inspirational program; be the inspiration!” He introduced Mr. Rudd as a “brother from another mother” who was a high school dropout from Marshall, Texas, who served in the military and then moved to Seattle in 1977.
Support our Rotary Foundations for a Year of Action and Impact!
As Rotarians, we are leaders connecting for extraordinary good –both in our community and around the world. Together we are eradicating polio and malaria, bringing fresh water to rural villages worldwide to stop the spread of disease, and helping our neighbors in need with housing, healthy foods, and educational opportunities.
Once a year we ask you to fulfill your membership obligations and take action by making two gifts that will impact the world. One is to the Seattle Rotary Service Foundation (SRSF). The other is to The Rotary Foundation (TRF). Thank you for taking action now to help our club have a powerful and positive impact on our world.

Holiday Shopping with the Rotary Boys & Girls Club
Saturday, December 8
10:00 am-3:00 pm @ the Rotary Boys & Girls Club, 201 19th Ave, Seattle
Each year the Rotary Community Service Committee, in conjunction with the Rotary Boys & Girls Club, creates a wonderful opportunity for all Rotarians, friends, and families to take a deserving, less-fortunate child on a holiday shopping outing.
The idea is simple: On one day in December volunteers who are willing to donate and spend their own money are paired with a child and accompany them on a 1-3 hour shopping excursion in downtown Seattle. This event is a wonderful way to help a child in need during the holidays.
Contact Joel Ferrell for more information or to sign up.
The 5th Avenue Theatre is offering Seattle #4 Rotarians a 25% discount on tickets to this season's production of Annie. Click the link below for details!
The Seattle Rotary Service Foundation announced the opening of the 2018 Opportunity Grants cycle. This funding program works to be responsive to the preferences of our member donors and the needs of our community, recognizing that sometimes our usual structure of annual grants does not make funds available when special opportunities, emergencies, and unique needs arise.
The maximum grant will be $7,500 and the minimum is $500. All applications must be received by SRSF by December 1, 2018.
Applications for these grants must come through the regular Seattle Rotary Service Committees.
For more information on committees, including those that do not have regular meeting times, see thecommittee page on our website. Meeting times and locations are subject to change, contact committee chairs for more information.
