Paul Harris once said that “Rotarians are very much more favorably disposed toward action than they are toward words.” And let me tell you, Dorothy Miller exudes just that, for she is quite the doer.

Dorothy is the eldest of five kids. FIVE! According to Dr. Kevin Leman, a psychologist and author of The Birth Order Book, “firstborn children tend to be achievement-oriented, often performing well in school and thriving in leadership positions…” and you’ll learn quickly throughout this introduction that Dorothy is in fact an oldest child..

Having grown up in northern New York, Dorothy always spent a lot of time playing outside. Even in tons of snow!  She went off to Pennsylvania to complete her undergraduate degree in Political Science at Messiah. While there, Dorothy studied abroad in China, which started her traveling knack.  Today, if you ask her friends, they’d joke that she’s always on the move.  Going back and forth between DC and Asia for four years after undergraduate studies, Dorothy decided to go back to graduate school at the University of Wisconsin. This is where she received not only a JD, but an MPH as well, and found her love for kayaking.  Kayaking, climbing, hiking, stand-up paddleboarding --Dorothy doesn’t shy away from being outdoors and being active.

On a professional level, from DC to Philly to Singapore to Indonesia, Dorothy traverses the world in helping her Global Vaccine Policy Team for Merck. You may have heard of Merck.  For more than a century, this company has been inventing medicines and vaccines for many of the world’s most challenging diseases, and Dorothy is at the forefront of it all working to drive global public policy to improve vaccine access and uptake.

When she’s not traveling the world, creating change in healthcare, or exploring nature, Dorothy really enjoys cooking and eating with her partner Avik. In fact, food was what brought them together, as they met at an Italian restaurant in Philly. They took a chance at love and moved out here together two years ago, most recently moving to the Madrona neighborhood.

While Rotary’s notable contributions to eradicating polio intrigued Dorothy, it was the idea of community that really brought her in. Knowing that our priorities aligned well was foundationally important, but once coming to a lunch and meeting the people and the welcoming nature, she knew it was something she wanted to be a part of.

Thank you to Liz Powell and Susie Roe for taking the time to get to know Dorothy and proposing her to the club under the classification of Health Care.  A fun side note: when we set our meeting to get to know one another, Dorothy invited me to her home that she just moved into days before. Talk about welcoming. Kind. And as you heard from earlier Driven. Active. And simply fascinating. These are all words that I have learned best describe Dorothy, and that’s only just the beginning. So, if you are looking to get outdoors this summer, wanting a new instapot recipe, in search of a new travel destination, or simply wanting to get to know a really wonderful person, make sure you introduce yourself to Dorothy Miller. You won’t be disappointed!
