Youth Adventures in Leadership (YAIL)-Help Send a Student to YAIL!

Do you know a student attending one of the four Bellingham high schools who has leadership potential? I could be your child, grandchild or another young person between the ages of 15 and 17 that you know. If so, please encourage them to visit www.YAIL.org to learn more about this valuable camp-style opportunity to meet others their age from District 5050 and develop their leadership skills. The camp is held outside White Rock, B.C. from January 22-24, 2016. Our Club sponsors three students each year; there is no cost to the student. Andrew Evans reminded Rotarians that Applications are due by Wednesday, December 30th. Interested students should send a short paragraph about why they would like to attend to Katherine Deets at kdeets@chmelik.com.  Nathan Twining shared that the club is looking to nominate three youth. For more information contact yail.org , Nathan, Mauri Ingram. Or Katherine.

Langley Ukulele Ensemble Event:

Brian Griffin shared that RCOB’s  community event will be held on Sunday April 24, 2016 at Bellingham High School theater at 2:30 pm. Brian told the audience about the April 24, 2016 concert by the Langley Ukulele Ensemble that is backed by Joe Coons, Chip Lauckhardt, and him. You can read about the event, hear the entertainers, and order tickets at rcob.brownpapertickets.com. The three Rotarians are taking the risk (not the Club) for the event which should net about $8,000 profit for Club projects if it sells out!  Buy them here for Christmas and save the handling charges (they take credit cards). Also for sale are 5 program ads for $200 each including 5 tickets.

John Dye - Visual Arts Student of the Month from Squalicum High School: John's focus is ceramics, particularly functional-ware such as bowls, cups, and, most recently, "moonshine jugs." His career goal is in the area of architecture. He plans to attend either the University of Idaho or Roger and Williams University in Rhode Island.

Program:

Vice-President and Program Chair Teri Treat introduced Brian Bressler, Regulatory Engineering Manager, PACCAR, Inc. Technical Center.

PACCAR has 24,000 employees world-wide, with about 300 of those based at the Skagit County Test Facility. Initially manufacturing rail cars, beginning in 1905, PACCAR moved from rail cars into the truck manufacturing and parts business. Kenworth, Peterbilt and DAF are the three main brands of trucks they manufacture. In addition, PACCAR is now producing heavy duty engines, and is involved in a variety of other goods and services. PACCAR trucks and engines are designed to last one million miles.

They use computer models to test parts in simulation before building prototypes. They test their trucks for extreme conditions: severe summer heat, bitter winter cold, high winds, heavy rains, and high altitudes. They do this by utilizing cold chambers, heat chambers, a wind tunnel, and an extreme rain chamber, among other testing conditions (as well as lots of time on the road in various locations and conditions).

PACCAR continues to exceed Global Truck Emission Standards, and manufactures trucks that are fuel efficient in addition to exceeding required emission standards.

They have a remarkable record of being profitable every quarter for the last 75 years.
