September 26, 2016

After some audience help, President Del VandeKerk turned his microphone on and welcomed us to the 4,500th meeting of our club.  It only took 99 years to get this far!   Although we have our share of bad news, President Del also shared some good news.  He reminded us that rotary has helped reduce poverty and reduce disease around the world thanks to Rotary foundation dollars and extreme volunteerism.

Email received from Bloodworks Northwest:

Thank you for your support of the Rotary Club of Bellingham Blood Drive!

On Monday, September 26, we registered a total of 20 donors at your blood drive! We welcomed 2 first-time-donors and congratulated 2 donors for reaching milestone gallon markers. We were able to collect 17 units of whole blood. Since each unit of whole blood is separated into the different components (red cells, platelets, and plasma), and can benefit three patients, your efforts will bring health and comfort to 51 patients throughout the Pacific Northwest. The blood donations collected at the blood drive are critical to maintain a stable blood supply for surgeries, medical emergencies, and for supporting patients battling life-threatening illnesses like leukemia and other cancers.

Thanks to all the donors who took time out of their busy day to donate blood. With great appreciation to the Rotary Club of Bellingham for blood drive sponsorship, John Moffat for organizing and coordinating the blood drive, Steve Ban for his assistance, and Shannon Rohrbacher at Northwood Hall for providing the location. You all play such an integral role in our mission to save lives – we wouldn’t be able to do it without your help!

On behalf of patients in our community’s hospitals, I wish to extend our thanks to you. These are a few patients who recently received blood products from Bloodworks Northwest:
  • 55 year old patient: Diagnosis of MTP. Patient used: 7 units Red Blood Cells, 6 units plasma, 2 unit platelets, and 1 unit cryoprecipitate pools.
  • 32 year old patient: Obstetric Bleeding. Patient used: 10 units Red Blood Cells, 6 units plasma, 1 unit platelets, and 1 unit cryoprecipitate pools.
  • 64 year old patient: Surgery. Patient used: 12 units Red Blood Cells, 12 units plasma, and 2 units platelets.
  • 46 year old patient: Gastrointestinal bleed. Patient used: 2 units Red Blood Cells, 10 units plasma, and 1 unit cryoprecipitate pool.

Each day, 800 people must donate blood to meet the needs of patients in hospitals. Your blood drive played an important role in helping meet that goal.

Those that donated at this blood drive will be eligible to give again on or after November 21.
To find other local opportunities to give, please visit www.bloodworksnw.org/drives

Reminder that the Major Project Selection Committee is taking applications until November 15th.  Information is on the tables.  If you have questions contact John Griggs or Peter Theisen.
It’s not too late to order a navy blue rotary shirt!. Please see Dominique Zervas for an order form.  The shirts are very comfortable and great for increasing visibility of our club when at events.
In an effort to promote rotary member networking, District 5050 developed a website called www.rotarynetworkingplus.com.  All members are encouraged to sign up on the site and provide basics about your business.  The site is a great way to promote your own and other’s businesses as John Stewart so ably demonstrated. Don't let this guy be the onlyest one from the club on the site.

We were joined by Bob Pritchett (CEO/President of Faithlife/Logos) and designer Brad Lockhart  (Lariat Creative) who talked about the genesis of a new city flag for Bellingham.
Many cities around the world have official flags, but not Bellingham.  The Downtown Partnership realized this need last year and decided to do something about it.  They had a design contest in August 2015 which was won by Mr. Lockhart.  The winning design avoids the pitfalls of many city flags that have visually unappealing (i.e. ugly) flags.
The Bellingham flag has a design that represents many different features of the community without overwhelming your senses.  Proudly represented are the four original cities, Bellingham Bay and its “noisy waters”, and the two original Salish tribes, Lummi and Nooksack.  The colors are pure northwest.  It meets all the modern standards of a great city flag.
Although it’s not yet our official city flag, its popularity is quickly gaining steam.  Many local breweries and restaurants proudly have it on display.  There is even a Kickstarter page that has sold about 200 flags so far.  The next step is to present the idea to the City Council.  If all goes well, we’ll finally have our very own city flag
