Grand Vision’s in-school music program, Meet the Music, began in 2009. It has grown into a model education program, annually serving over 1,800 fourth and fifth graders in San Pedro and Wilmington with an innovative sequential 18-month curriculum.

Fourth graders receive the Roots of Music Program (RoMP) which teaches foundational music concepts through global music traditions. Fifth graders receive Recorders-in-Schools, a full school year of weekly instrumental training. This two-year approach ensures that students gain real musical skills as well as a developing sense of cultural literacy that they can take with them into middle school and beyond.

Dr. Tony Rasmussen, Director of Music Education for Grand Vision Foundation

Dr. Tony Rasmussen, Director of Music Education, is a teacher, ethnographer, and published author specializing in sound culture in Latin America and its diaspora. His work can be found in the journals Women and Music, Ethnomusicology Forum, and in forthcoming issues of Latin American Music Review.

Dr. Rasmussen is also a prolific music composer and performer, having written original music for a range of media and performed with a number of traditional ensembles such as mariachi, Andean, and Persian classical. 

Deeply committed to youth arts education, Dr. Rasmussen has designed and taught curriculum across multiple subjects including elementary school STEAM workshops in Riverside and middle/high school music production with UCLA’s Summer Discovery and After-School All-Stars. He directs all aspects of GVF’s Meet the Music program.
