Rotary Foundation Honored
Rotary Foundation Recognized with Award for Outstanding Foundation

The Association of Fundraising Professionals has recognized The Rotary Foundation with its annual Award for Outstanding Foundation.
The award honors organizations that show philanthropic commitment and leadership through financial support, innovation, encouragement of others, and involvement in public affairs. Some of the boldest names in American giving — Kellogg, Komen, and MacArthur, among others —are past honorees.
“We are honored to receive this recognition from the AFP, which gives us even more reason to celebrate during our Foundation’s centennial year,” says Rotary Foundation Trustee Chair Kalyan Banerjee. “The continued strong support of Rotary members will help us keep our promise of a polio-free world for all children and enable the Foundation to carry out its mission of advancing world understanding, goodwill, and peace. We look forward to another 100 years of Rotary members taking action to make communities better around the world.”
The announcement came on 15 November, known to industry professionals since the 1980s as National Philanthropy Day. The award will be presented in early 2017 at the AFP’s annual conference in San Francisco.
Rotary Foundation Trustee Chair-elect Paul Netzel is set to accept the award on Rotary’s behalf, and Eric Schmelling, director of fund development at Rotary, will speak at the conference. The event is expected to draw more than 3,400 senior-level fundraising professionals from 33 countries.
“While almost everyone is familiar with Rotary, not everyone may realize just how much of an impact Rotary and The Rotary Foundation have had on countless people and communities across the globe,” says Jason Lee, AFP president and CEO. “On behalf of the entire charitable sector and people around the world, all of us at AFP are honored to be able to recognize The Rotary Foundation as our 2016 Outstanding Foundation.”
AFP’s committee of judges cited Rotary’s comprehensive campaign to eradicate polio as a major driver of the selection. They also mentioned that Rotary applies a methodical, purposeful approach to support a wide variety of causes, from providing clean water to educating the next generation of peace professionals.

In Case We Missed You, November 18th
The PVP Rotary Club enjoyed an offsite meeting at the beautiful Norris Pavilion on November, 18. The buffet was so plentiful that members thought that they were at a banque!
Jim Hartman gave a heartfelt invocation, Chris Leach recited the pledge, and Phyllis Pelezzare  sang the Patriotic song, accompanied by Juliet DeMoss , and  David Rowe sang the Welcome song.  Joan Behrens and Jim Hartman thanked all the many members for their help with the Educator of the Year Dinner.

Announcements:
President Alan announced that our Holiday Party will take place on December 11 at Los Verdes Country Club.
He also said that 20 Seniors attended the Rotary Senior Lunch held at the Sunrise Senior Center and  was facilitated by Lauren Spiglanin and Julia Parton.
Alan also explained that an increase  in our dues was inevitable  because of  increases in  costs from the Golf Club and Rotary International.
He asked us to please try and be present at Greg O’Brien’s official District Governor visit on December 2.
Inga Liden was inducted into our club on October 31, 2008. It’s great to have you as a dedicated member, Inga.

Our speaker today was Chris Gilbert, the Director of Sales and Development for the Norris Pavilion, the Norris Theater and the Palos Verdes Performing Arts Conservatory.

Chris referred to these as the “ Jewel of the Peninsula”, with  three “stones”, that foster an understanding and appreciation of the arts.  The Norris Theater was opened in 1983 as a 450 seat theater dedicated to offering something for everyone to be inspired and entertained.  Performances are staged and choreographed by professionals and the Theater is the focal point for arts and entertainment on the Peninsula with it’s worldclass offerings.
The  Palos Verdes Performing Arts Conservatory, with a soon to be completed new state of the art facility, educates and enriches children  through dance, music and theater.
The Conservatory’s Ready Willing and Able Program provides classes for Special Needs children attending  not only  schools in the  Palos Verdes School District,  but  also at Title One Schools nearby. Classes are taught twice a week at the schools in conjunction with the language provided f.
The Norris Pavilion is a multi-use facility offering event space for banquets, concerts and fundraisers. It is dedicated to the late Harlyne Norris.  Taken together, all three venues offer cultural enrichment for our community.
A few delightful coincidences were revealed during Chris’ talk and the  question and answer period afterward.  We learned that Chris was able to enjoy some quality time with his father, while learning about Rotary’s Four Way Test.  Chris’ dad is a member of the Maplewood, New Jersey Rotary Club.  Alan Coleman announced that his father was the founder of that Rotary Club in 1948.  Mary Jane then told us that her daughter and Chris were members of the first class to perform at the Norris back in 1983.  Small world!

Remember that we are DARK  next Friday in observance of Thanksgiving.
End Polio Now Update
Polio this week as of 16 November 2016
Wild poliovirus type 1 and Circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus cases

Headlines:
The recently-established Transition Independent Monitoring Board (Transition IMB) is holding its inaugural meeting this week in London, UK. The group has been established to monitor and guide polio transition (previously referred to as ‘legacy’) planning. The Transition IMB is separate from the regular IMB which monitors and guides progress towards interrupt of transmission of polioviruses.
The role of IPV in the Polio Endgame---Thanks to major steps forward including the declaration of wild poliovirus type 2 as eradicated in September 2015, the phased removal of oral polio vaccines began in April 2016 with the withdrawal of the type 2 component. As an essential part of this, all countries agreed to introduce one dose of IPV into their routine immunization systems to boost immunity against poliovirus types 1 and 3 and provide a baseline of immunity against type 2 in case of an outbreak of type 2 vaccine derived polioviruses.

Afghanistan: No new wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) cases were reported in the past week. The total number of WPV1 cases for 2016 remains 12. The most recent case had onset of paralysis on 12 October, from Bermal district, Paktika province. Six of the country’s 12 cases are from Bermal district.

Pakistan: No new wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) cases were reported in the past week. The total number of WPV1 cases for 2016 remains 16. The most recent case had onset of paralysis on 3 September, from Kohistan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

Nigeria: No new cases of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) were reported in the past week. The total number of WPV1 cases for 2016 remains four. The most recent case had onset of paralysis on 21 August, from Monguno Local Government Area (LGA), Borno.
