Stories
John William Johnstone Jr. (born November 20, 1946[1]) is an American former professional baseball player, active from 1966 to 1985 for the California Angels, Chicago White Sox, Oakland Athletics, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Yankees, San Diego Padres, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Chicago Cubs. Johnstone was known as a versatile outfielder with a good sense of humor, known for keeping clubhouses loose with occasional pranks and gimmicks.

He pulled off a number of infamous pranks during his playing days, including placing a soggy brownie inside Steve Garvey's first base mitt, setting teammate's cleats on fire (known as "hot-footing"), cutting out the crotch area of Rick Sutcliffe's underwear, locking Dodger manager Tommy Lasorda in his office during spring training, once dressing up as a groundskeeper and sweeping the Dodger Stadium infield in between innings and then hitting homers the next, nailing teammate's cleats to the floor, and replacing the celebrity photos in manager Lasorda's office with pictures of himself, Jerry Reuss and Don Stanhouse. One time, during pre-game warm ups, he climbed atop the Dodger dugout and, in full game uniform, walked through the field boxes at Dodger Stadium to the concession stand and got a hot dog. He also once dressed up in Lasorda's uniform (with padding underneath) and ran out to the mound to talk to the pitcher while carrying Lasorda's book and a can of Slim Fast.

As a baseball announcer, he once covered a microphone with a scent of stale eggs then proceeded to interview Dave Stewart, Mickey Hatcher and other players.

Many of the pranks, along with other aspects of his career, are described in the books he co-authored with sports columnist Rick TalleyTemporary Insanity, Over the Edge, and Some of My Best Friends Are Crazy.

Johnstone appeared in the movie Naked Gun as a member of the Seattle Mariners in a game against the California Angels. Johnstone, who was a left-handed hitter throughout his career, bats right-handed in the movie.

After the Dodgers' 1981 World Series victory, Johnstone and Dodger teammates Rick Monday (with whom he shares a birthday, service in the Marines, and stints with the A's, Cubs, and Dodgers), Jerry Reuss, and Steve Yeager appeared on Solid Gold and sang their own rendition of Queen's hit, We Are the Champions.

What a great meeting, we were so luck to be joined by this living legend.

The guests who attended included Pat Hartman, Kathy Schuricht, Connie Lazar, Robin Colman, Liz Sparkman, Sherrie Tossell,  Ray  Johnson, Cheryl Hellberg,   Dan Fitzgerald,  Susan Rubicam and Karen Cameron.

Since we are nearing the end of January, this reporter thought it prudent to check on some of the members to see if they were fulfilling their commitments to their New Year’s resolutions.  The responses were utilitarian,  esoteric and  profoundly philosophical .

Here is a sampling of goals and wishes for 2015, The Year of the Ram:

Harry Kitter vowed to install a client relationship manager software program on his computer, and I am happy to announce that he has realized this high-tech goal.

Liz Fitzgerald’s hope  for this year is “ to let it blow and have fun.”

Inga wants to laugh more, and Kjell said he’d have to think about his goals.

Donna Duperon  wants to see more green and start billing people sooner, and Charlie Elias resolved not to  have a New Year’s resolution.

Nikki wants to add ten more pounds to the sixteen she’s already lost, subtracting a total of twenty-six, and Keith wants to stay healthy.

John Schuricht’s goal is to practice the piano more, and he hopes  that the U.S. will attain more energy independence with the passage of the Keystone pipeline project.

Jim Hartman’s illustrious goal is to have fewer goals, and Greg Sparkman resolved to come up with a New Year’s resolution next year.

And this reporter’s goal is to knit more.

On a more serious note, President Jim, President –elect Les Fishman,  Ray Johnson and Greg Sparkman discussed the Concour D’elegance  and our Rotary club’s importance to the event.  They intend to make some changes to the event, to be revealed as time and planning progresses, to ensure a meaningful role for all new members.

The meeting was “adjourned” around 8:15 with several stragglers in the room endeavoring to wrap-up important conversations, and the doors closed around 8:30 PM.
