Joel Engardio works for a PR firm that specializes in tech start-ups. By hobby, he is a columnist for the San Francisco Examiner. Joel has won multiple journalism awards in outlets like USA Today, PBS and the Examiner. He has also worked in communication strategy for non-profits including the American Civil Liberties Union. His ACLU and journalism work were recognized by the Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy with a scholarship to the Harvard Kennedy School of Government where Joel earned a Master in Public Administration.

In 2016, Joel won the endorsements of the San Francisco Chronicle and Examiner when he ran for city supervisor in District 7 on San Francisco’s west side. He finished a strong second place, with a platform to build more housing and transportation infrastructure for San Francisco’s future. Joel serves on the board of directors for the United Democratic Club and the Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club. He previously served as a member of the San Francisco Democratic County Central Committee.

At this luncheon, Joel will provide an entertaining look at the history that shaped our local politics and how to make sense of it today. See where you fit on San Francisco's unique political spectrum!
