President Julie Pingston pulled everyone in from their small group conversations and called the meeting to order. The invocation was provided by Sandro Sidamonidze, Prayer for Peace live from Vienna, Austria. The patriotic song was the National Anthem by the US Army Chorus.
President Julie unmuted John Person to introduce his guest, Katy Crick, recent “10 Over 10” recipient (and soon-to-be Rotarian). Julie unmuted Terry Terry to introduce his guest, Kayla N. Green from Message Makers. Donna Gardner introduced her guest, Linda Burnhum, retiree and acquaintance of David Barr. Julie shared on behalf of Diane Sanborn shared the health of the club is well.
Announcements included:
• Kim Brock Garland was recognized as a new red badge member of Lansing Rotary.
• Dave O’Leary is having his 90th birthday soon. Reach out and wish him a “happy birthday!”
• International Grant Application has a deadline coming up next week: Saturday, Oct. 31, 2020.
• Jenn Dubey is Paul Harris Chair and gave an update on World Polio Day, Oct. 23. She gave a history of the establishment of the day and expressed the importance of the work to raise awareness.
Rotarians Doing Great Things: Uma: Mission to Mars
Uma Umakanth presented a free event “Mission to Mars,” near the Meridian Police Dept., happening on Saturday, Oct. 23. The event is a “STEM for All” event where students simulate a mission to Mars, learn about Mars, the solar system, rockets and more.
Special music featured MSU Alumni Band - More than 75 Spartans have come together as one in the MSU Fight Song, “Victory for MSU,” and created a video from our own homes.
Thanks to our Chair of the Month, Terry Terry, who provided the introduction of David Barr, Management Consultant at CMP Services, LLC, a firm devoted to helping small and middle-market businesses (SMBs) grow top-line revenue (www.cmp-services.com ).
Mr. Barr spoke on “TRIZ: Russian Brainstorming Methodology".
Highlights include:
• In looking for innovation, oftentimes, we are waiting for a “creative flash” when we are brainstorming, but there needs to be a process and incremental improvements. It is otherwise dependent on who is around the table and is unpredictable.
• Systems can change if we reframe our methods and tools to something familiar.
• TRIZ (pronounced “trees”) introduces creativity as a science. It is based, in part, upon pattern repetition and other discoveries in Worldwide patents, History of Tech, Sociology and Economics
• Basic TRIZ Concepts: Ideality, Resources, Contradictions
Q & A included clarification on utilization of the methodology and how to be trained in it.
President Pingston shared that in lieu of a speaker’s gift, we will make a donation in Mr. Barr’s honor to a local organization through our Lansing Rotary Foundation which has, over the history of our club, given in excess of $2,000,000 to local organizations and projects.
