Ghida Neukirch introduced our speaker, Highland Park Police Chief Paul Shafer to the Club. He began his career in Bellwood, IL in 1979.
Chief Shafer discussed how law enforcement has changed. The scope of the job today with the current minefields, make it the worst time for police work. This is all too prevalent by what we see in the news every day from our living rooms. The law gives too much leeway. Highland Park officers are well trained and have coped with many instances like the shooting at the hospital.
Yet, apparently no call is too small for our Chief. Recently, when out to dinner with his wife, he received a call about dog poop on a lawn. He turned to his wife and jokingly said, "I have a crappy job."
He fielded questions from the Club about whether the department has tasers from Penny Levin-Field. The HPPD does.
President Plouché asked if the overdose correcting drug police are able to administer had any after-effects. His answer was no.
Len Tenner asked if HP has any gang problems. The Chief said no, but don't leave your keys in the car.
Alyssa Knobel, Councilwoman, announced a panel on domestic violence was being on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at the HP Rec Center. A business summit is scheduled for October.
