Basil Lewis is a returning speaker who talked about the History of Rotary Clubs and how they spread through the world. He spoke about Rotary's name and how it's origin came from "rotate" because the meeting locations frequently "rotated" around. Basil was funny and had the room laughing with his witty sense of humor.
Ghida Neukirch, our City Manager, then introduced herself and spoke about our relationship with the Interact Club. Ghida opened up with a few ice breaker games, which we all played and enjoyed this fun time getting to know the Interact students.
After games, the two teacher leaders of Interact, Melissa Zientara and Matt Nieto, introduced the Interact Board who all shared their various positions of the Club. Co-President Remy Lichtenstein gave us a briefing of their volunteer activities such as the Special Olympics Floor Hockey Event, the Troop Care Package Drive, Polar Plunge and Ronald McDonald House Meals. The Interact Club spoke about sharing common goals with our Rotary Chapter and were thankful to our Club for keeping Rotary alive in our community.
Melissa added that the Interact Board members put in 3-5 hours a week outside of school in meetings which help make everything that happens possible.
This was a successful joint meeting between Rotary and Interact of which we will have more to come in the future.
A special thanks to the Highland Park High School principal and Club member Tom Koulentes, who provided a tour of the school at the end. We were able to see many of the improvements and renovations that have taken place, making HPHS a wonderful place for students to learn and thrive.
