The Day's Program

This week our guest speaker was Jan Gibson. Jan is the manager of Genesee Theatre, a concert hall and movie palace in Waukegan, Illinois only 20 minutes from Highland Park. Originally constructed privately and opened on Christmas Day in 1927 as a vaudeville theater and cinema, it closed in 1989.

The city of Waukegan reopened the Genesee in 2004. It employs a staff of 100. It has seating for 2,433 people with additional rooms for private gatherings. It hosts many different music, comedy and corporate events to include weddings and bar mitzvahs.  Additionally the stage is similar to that of the Civic Opera in Chicago one of the largest stages around...4600 feet.

It boasts an outdoor lounge and seven other rooms plus the oldest air conditioning system in the area (which still works). There is plenty of safe parking available.

The city of Waukegan owns the theater and leases it for one dollar a year, which it recovers with added sales and hotel taxes.

Jan Gibson giving the Club the lowdown on the Genesee Theatre.
