Roni Weiss, Holly Kerr and Gerry Rudman from Friends for Health came to present a slideshow about their 501c3 organization in Highland Park. Ms Weiss, Director of Community Development, who also had a major hand in getting everything up and running, spoke about the mission which is to run a health center that is available to everyone regardless of one’s ability to pay. They are made up of volunteers and paid staff.
Established in 2002, Friends for Health helps fills the gap in community healthcare. Partnering with Lake County Health Department, they transform lives for the uninsured and under-insured in southeast Lake County, located at North Shore Health Center.
They provide medical care, dental care, medication assistance and preventative care. They make a difference with Wellness and Community Outreach programs, in over 1000 Rec Center memberships, 190 educational presentations and over 70 community health screenings. Family Oriented Health and Wellness activities such as health focused family fun nights, and families planting gardens in Moraine Township Pantry Garden. Specialty care is provided through consults with over 2600 volunteer specialists. Their Diabetes Program has seen over 1500 patients with over 4500 nutritional consults.
In 2014, they had 16,500 visits; 50% of patients were covered by Medicaid; 45% of patients were uninsured; 36% of patients were below the poverty level.
Rotary has been a supporter since 2006.
We all thanked Roni Weiss and her team for coming; she is an amazing person who has done so much and continues to help make healthcare more accessible to all!
Thank you to Cynthia Plouche and Mike Babian for help with this week’s bulletin!
