Rotary at Rosewood Wrap-up
It couldn't have been a prettier October night for Our First Annual "Rotary at Rosewood Event". The autumn sunset didn't disappoint and neither did the deep pink moon rising over Lake Michigan. The weather was truly in our favor. Fellowship Chair Mike Babian orchestrated with the aid of Sunset Foods Catering and HP Park District's stunning setting at Rosewood Beach. The food was delicious; the company was wonderful, and there can't be enough said about the weather!

Raffle winners were:
Starbucks Gift Basket - Len Tenner
Box of Wine - Len Tenner
Del Rio Dinner & bottle of wine - Herb Loeb

The evening wouldn't been the success that it was without a 'shout out' of thanks to the following people: Carolyn Cerf for her delightful and festive decorations; Cynthia Plouché for bringing the wine, cups, plates and silverware; Frank Vena for donating the raffle Box of Wine; and Bill Pigati for donating the raffle Del Rio dinner and bottle of wine.

We look forward to continuing this event next year and hope it brings even more Club Members and their families - after all, the more, the merrier!

The Day's Program
Ghida Neukirch spoke in place of Business Development Manager Carolyn Hersch to describe the City’s efforts to retain and enhance existing businesses and attract new businesses to HIghland Park. This is not a plan that sits on some shelf.  It is an active and viable effort on the part of the City for our business districts to grow and be profitable.  The four goals of this effort are:  Promote and retain existing business, Attract new business , Revitalize the City through strategic business development efforts and coordinate with business districts, organizations, regional & state partners.

There are 9 separate business districts in the City.  The City promotes business through street  banners, its website and city publications; and beautification and recognition awards.  The City provides site selection assistance, (54 new businesses this past year), improvement grant program, sales tax incentives and streetscape projects.  Some business district property owners participate in Special Service Area where the property owners impose a property tax on themselves to improve City infrastructure.

Ghida than introduced her Director of Community Development, Joel Fontane.  Joel reported on the Porsche and Audi improvements which were enhanced by participation in the sales tax rebate program, the hospital core upgrades that have been approved, and two rental apartment developments, one on Central at 73 units and 6 stories and the 833 Laurel project with 26 rental units.

The presentation resulted in lively discussion and questions.

The meeting was adjourned shortly after 1 pm.
The Special Olympics Floor Hockey Tournament
Being a cheerleader was just one of the many jobs several Club members took on when they signed up for the HPHS Special Olympics Floor Hockey Tournament. Saturday morning, amid sunshine and late summer weather, Community Projects Chair Ghida Neukirch, Frank Lomoro, Skip Jacobs, Dale Mugler, Diana Sotelo, Len Tenner President Cynthia Plouché and Phil and Carol Lazarus joined the energetic students of the Interact Club, led by sponsor Melissa Zientara.

Greeting each participant as they are the great Olympians arcing over every hurtle facing them in their lives, was just the start. Keeping them and the other volunteers, not to mention the families and friends who came to cheer, well hydrated was a serious task on a day much warmer than normal for a date on the October calendar.

Kudos to all the Olympians! and Kudos to our Members for hustling and looking sharp out there!
