In case you didn't see Karen Dennis on the front page of the Highland Park News, nor read the following article (on page 6) about the meal the Club served at St James Parish last week, please go to highlandpark-news.com to check it out. It goes to show that the members of the our Club sincerely believe in Rotary's Service Above Self motto and find activities like the Supper at St. James highly gratifying both in service and building community among members (a quote from Karen Dennis). It was another successful event!
Thanks to all who donated and volunteered!

Mark your calendars:
Our Club is on the move!
On Monday April 25th, we will meet with the Interact Club at HPHS at noon.

The Day's Program
This week we were joined by State Senator Daniel Biss who represents the Illinois 9th Senate district. He is the Chairman of the Human Services Committee and the Subcommittee on Special Issues.

The primary focus of Senator Biss' presentation was the historical changes in the Midwestern economy and their impact on the current economic environment.  The twin pillars of manufacturing and agriculture have changed dramatically over the past one hundred years and the regional decline in agriculture and manufacturing has had a major impact, noting that different Midwestern states had varying response to the circumstances.

He also addressed the political culture and the concept of machine politics as it relates to the allocation of state resources.  His closing comments talked about civic engagement.

A very special thanks to Karen Dennis and Cynthia Plouché for their help in putting together this week's bulletin!
