  • On Wednesday, March 25, we will host a special evening program featuring the work of Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist John H. White. This program will also be in the auditorium and it will take the place of our Thursday noon meeting that week. Many more details to come, but in the meantime, please mark your calendars.
  • Our next hands-on service project will be held Thursday, March 19. We are working out details of who will be assisting this time.
  • Don’t miss our February 5 meeting, which will feature a program by Rotary Global Scholar, Junji Takaoka.

Special thanks to the Program Committee for its work in pulling together these events!

Membership Briefing is January 22
The program on Thursday, January 22 will be a Membership Briefing for the the club. During this meeting we’ll go over our new membership strategy and discuss the messages about the club that each of us should convey to our friends and colleagues as a part of our PR and branding efforts. You’ll hear about some of the exciting plans being made by the Membership Council as we ratchet up our membership outreach. (Note: This program will not likely be of interest for visitors so we would suggest that you don’t bring guests this week -- unless it is someone who is actively in our membership pipeline.)

Foundation Contributions
We have established a goal of 100 percent participation in charitable giving to the Rotary Foundation this year, and we we’ll be asking for donations at coming meetings. Even if it is just a modest amount, please consider giving at some level.

Paul Harris Match Still Available
District 6440 is making available a $500 match for anyone considering becoming a Paul Harris Fellow. Please take advantage of this offer -- for $500, you can become a Fellow. See President Paul for more details.

Friendship Garden Sign
You may have noticed that the Friendship Garden sign has been taken down. This is only temporary and was done because the sign had fallen into significant disrepair. We are going to refurbish the sign and have a new one in place as soon as possible -- hopefully this spring. We will keep you apprised.

Guatemala Volunteer Spots Still Available
If you haven’t ever participated in one of our District’s service trips to Guatemala, this year two different options are available.  There is still some room in each of our two trips.  February 14th – 23rd to Antigua and February 28th – March 9th trip to Ak’Tenamit. If you would like to learn more about how these trips work and what you will do as a Rotary volunteer, please see Phill Klein or Bridget McDonough, who have both participated.

Special Award for Dick Peach
President Paul presented Dick Peach with Rotary International’s Avenues of Service Citation, honoring Dick’s long commitment of service to our club, District 6440, Rotary International, and the community in general. Dick has been an outstanding leader and role model of service in our club, ranging from his coordination of our scholarship programs, various youth projects and the Friendship Garden to his many contributions to the website, service projects, our annual Fourth of July Parade participation, tending to speakers’ AV needs, and much, much more. Dick is always there when needed and he has been instrumental in leading our club -- including his service as club president. We thank you, Dick for all you do!

PizzaFest is coming!
Dave Stumpf and Gene Servillo, our PizzaFest chairs, launched PizzaFest season with a quick heads up to be ready for a great event this spring--May 12, specifically. Details will be shared in coming weeks. Remember that PizzaFest is one of our two major fundraisers and your participation is needed...When the time comes to sign up to help, please volunteer!

Program: Adrian Dortch
Evanston’s own “Biggest Loser” Adrian Dortch discussed being on reality TV, wellness and the value of a “purpose-driven life”.

He talked about “clean cuisine”: Oatmeal, berries, seeds, nuts, salads, tofu, micronutrients, and being a vegetarian.

Tips included:
> Making meals for the week ahead
> Moving as much as possible, ideally a half-hour/day
Adrian works out as much at 2.5 hrs/day, because for him, it is not just working-out for his body, but it’s his way to meditate, too.
> Six smaller meals/day, rather than three
> Develop rituals and habits that will help support your goals

He offered to go to Katherine Eiff’s home to cook.
