ImagePresident Mark Tauber tried a new/old tradition after he inducted Rex Paisley, sponsored by C W MoellenkampRex ran the gauntlet of a line of hand-shaking Rotarians.   Welcome aboard!  Thanks and congrats, CW, on sponsoring a new member!

Jim Bertucci encouraged us to volunteer to help Salute with their Race on May 26th, noting that Salute volunteers had helped a lot with our Santa Run.  You can go to www.saluteinc.org/ to learn about the good work of Salute, and to volunteer, or contact club member Will Beiersdorf.

For the rest of the club announcements, the happy fines and Fine Master Jim Hassenplug's quiz,

Jim also told us we can contact him to order Rotary attire (no there aren't any plaid golfing shorts or sport coats! ); we can see what's available by going on line to see a catalog (though orders have to be placed through the club) -- http://www.bestclubsupplies.com/

Millie Palmer, our Interact representative/organizer for Rolling Meadows High School told of that club's volunteer efforts during Service Week, including the assembling of 176 meal packages which supply 38,000 meals for kids and PADs sites events.  You can see more on the poster Lynn Jensen recently sent.  We're encouraged to volunteer our ice-cream scooping arms and Rotary smiles to the 5/16 ice cream social.  Contact Millie for more information.

Terry Ennes encouraged us to be volunteer greeters at O'Hare for an upcoming Rotary International conference.  Contact Terry for time and date.

Before educating us about Homographs, Rotarians celebrated with Happy Fines -- Newest member Rex was happy about joining the club.  Jim himself acknowledge the club's Happiness at the fine work done by several club members, including Kris and Lynn, in making the mayor's event so special.  Kris was Happy that her mom is back home after a good stay at the Lutheran Home.  Mary Cay was Happy, too, about her mother's progress after an operation.  Mark was Happy, noting he's "always on edge".

Jim's Quiz asked us to fill in the homographic blanks (see below* for his erudite syllabus).  Try completing a couple of his questions to understand the subject matter --

  • The dump was so full, they had to "refuse" the refuse.
  • There was a row among the oarsmen about how to "row."

* [from Wikipedia, "A homograph (from the Greek: ὁμός, homós, "same" and γράφω, gráphō, "write") is a word that shares the same written form as another word but has a different meaning. When spoken, the meanings may be distinguished by different pronunciations, in which case the words are also heteronyms. Words with the same writing and pronunciation (i.e. homographs and homophones) are considered homonyms. However, in a looser sense the term "homonym" may be applied to words with the same writing or pronunciation. Homograph disambiguation is critically important in speech synthesis, natural language processing and other fields. Identically-written different senses of what is judged to be fundamentally the same word are called polysemes; for example, wood (substance) and wood (area covered with trees)."]
