Many thanks are due to Jack Western for bringing to us Michael Keith Olson, today's speaker.   Michael, a local author, agriculturist, and news and media giant, has a long and diverse resume.

He's made his mark in national print, TV, and radio journalism circles.  He consults internationally on Metro-Farming. He's GM and on-air personality at local radio stations KSCO and KOMY.   He runs MO MultiMedia Group and he still finds time to author best-selling books!

Today's talk was on his latest issue "Tales from a Tin Can". This book is motivated by the experiences of his father, Robert "Pat" Olson, and many of his shipmates aboard the USS Dale during WWII.

The destroyer Dale, a so-called tin can for its lack of armor, survived the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec 7, 1941.  She went on to fight in many battles throughout the Pacific Theater until being decommissioned in 1945.

"Tales from a Tin Can is the true story of the destroyer USS Dale in the words of sailors who servied on her.  These colofrul first-person accounts bring to life every aspect of service on a World War II destroyer, from the attack on Pearl Harbor, to life on the Dale, to gripping combat stories, to a real ice cream muntiny, all the way to the very end in New York City."

Olson, a story teller of uncommon skill, read a series of selections from the book, itself a collection of remembrances and tales by crewmembers of the Dale.   Ohlson gave us a wonderful sense of his engaging writing style and the unimaginable experiences of the Dale's crew.
