Youth and Resources

Our guest speaker on May 19, was Angela Chan, Sunnyvale Neighborhood Center's Youth and Resources Manager.  More information regarding CNC can be found at Columbia Neighborhood Center.
Amoung the many community services provided to low income families are a Legal Clinic staffed by the South Asian Bar Association and free and low cost medical services provided through the Mayview Community Health Center located at the site. One program that drew considerable interest from the club members involves children reading to pets.  This program encourages children to read to a non-threatening and attentive audience of pets. The CNC is a operated by the City of Sunnyvale and comes under the Department of Libraries and Community Services.

CLUB ASSEMBLY

Next week's program will be a Club Assembly and your attendance is required!  This is an opportunity to take a breath, review where we have been, discuss where we are going and recommit to the principles of Rotary and the welfare of the Rotary Club of Sunnyvale.  This is not a time to leave the driving to someone else.  This club belongs to all of us,  and what it is and becomes will in large part be determined by how much we care and are willing to commit to its character and quality.  We cannot be a viable Rotary Club when over half the members are not committed to one of the club committees and/or functions. We cannot be a viable Rotary Club when more than half the members do not attend club meetings or participate in club social events and community projects.  The Club Assembly is the time to consider where and how your talents and interests can converge for the benefit of our club, our community and the world.

These were the badges NOT worn by members today.  Is one of them yours?

Art in the City

Today's program, Art in the City, was introduced by Rotarian and Sunnyvale Director of Library and Community Services, Lisa Rosenblum.  Sunnyvale City employees Kristin Dance and Tegan McClane, provided a delightful and colorful presentation on the manifold civic arts within the city of Sunnyvale.  These art works are made available as part of the permitting process, that is, developers are obligated to include civic arts in their projects as the terrain and footprint allow.  Art works are included in both industrial and civic locations, including corporation properties and city parks.  To see more visit http://historicimages.insunnyvale.org/cdm/search/searchterm/Art%20in%20Public%20Places/mode/exact

Neal A. Hoffman Award Winner

At the District Conference Luncheon on Saturday, April 18, Jeff Olevson, Rotary Club of Sunnyvale, will receive the Neil J. Hoffman Award.
This annual district award is presented to an outstanding young Rotarian under the age of 45 who has shown exemplary leadership skills in their club and/or the district.
The award is named for Neal Hoffman District Governor 1998-1999, who at the time of his tragic death following a small plane crash, was a young dentist in the Rotary Club of Santa Clara and a rising star in Rotary International.
In addition to the District-wide recognition for his achievements, Jeff will receive an all-expense paid trip (air fare, conference cost, and hotel) to the Uniendo America Project Fair in Central America next January

Rebecca Buldo, Rotarian and Event Coordinator today, with the help of Rotarian Michelle Lewis, distributed Dinner at the Dump 2015 tickets to club members.  Each member recieved 10 tickets and President, Dick Smith, emphasized that these are for sale, not for return!  Keep in mind that some members are able to sell many more than 10, so if you can't sell them yourself (but at least try!) you may find a members who needs extras you can provide.
Instead of the traditional 100 plus silent auction items offered in the past, this year there will be 15-20 high dollar item baskets raffled off.  Each basket will include high ticket electronics, such as ipads, flat screen tvs, plus appropriate accessories and consumables.  Raffle tickets will be for sale only at the event.  Rebecca will also be looking for volunteer and a signup sheet will be available at next week's meeting.

The event flyer is available as a download from this website.  A website for the event is in preparation and a link will be included as soon as it becomes available.
