The Ice Cream Social at Bishop Elementary School on May 20 was a sellout and a huge success in spite of the cold weather. The purpose of this Rotary hosted event is to raise funds for the Bishop Elementary afterschool Theater Arts program. Rotarian Larry Gaasterland underwrote the cost of the ice cream, so all proceeds went to benefit the program. Rotarian servers included Jeff Olevson, Flo Stafford, Pat Vorrieter, Cathy Nieto, Donna Smith, Linda Price, Antonia Tognetti, Judy Macias and Marie Kuykendall. Many Thanks to all who worked on this. The students at Bishop thoroughly enjoyed the ice cream and love to perform in the musicals supported by this event. GREAT JOB!

Schools Community Services and Rotary Join Efforts to Help Kids
Schools superintendent, Dr. Ben Picard, and Sunnyvale Community Services Director, Marie Bernard, partnered in providing an overview of the upcoming "Our Kids Our Community" event scheduled for
Did you know that when school is out, half of Sunnyvale’s school children are hungry? 47% of Sunnyvale’s children qualify for free or reduced school meals, and during the summer months, they miss the balanced nutrition they get during the school year. That’s why Sunnyvale Community Services is partnering with the Sunnyvale School District, Sunnyvale Rotary, and the Northwest YMCA to help all of our school children get the food they need this summer, and be ready for success in school this fall. Our community is working together to fill the gaps for food, backpacks, school supplies, and shoe vouchers for our children. This video from last year's program illustrates the need and the community response.
President, Dick Smith, reminded members we need several more GOOD bottles of wine for the wine pull at the upcoming Dinner at the Dump event. The wine pull at the crabfeed was highly successful. Because each "chance' costs $20, the bottle donated should be of at least that value. Even if you will be away on the event date, you can still help out your club and the community with your beverage donation.
Several members have sent out notices through social networks to apprise friends and family of the event. Jerry Nabhan, event founder and host continued to urge members to get payments in sooner rather than later, both to encourage sales and so that we can get some idea of the number of guests expected. Liz and Herb Lopez will be donating a new Apple Watch as a raffle item. The winner will get to select the color (gold not included!).
