Amoung the many community services provided to low income families are a Legal Clinic staffed by the South Asian Bar Association and free and low cost medical services provided through the Mayview Community Health Center located at the site. One program that drew considerable interest from the club members involves children reading to pets. This program encourages children to read to a non-threatening and attentive audience of pets. The CNC is a operated by the City of Sunnyvale and comes under the Department of Libraries and Community Services.

Schools superintendent, Dr. Ben Picard, and Sunnyvale Community Services Director, Marie Bernard, partnered in providing an overview of the upcoming "Our Kids Our Community" event scheduled for
Did you know that when school is out, half of Sunnyvale’s school children are hungry? 47% of Sunnyvale’s children qualify for free or reduced school meals, and during the summer months, they miss the balanced nutrition they get during the school year. That’s why Sunnyvale Community Services is partnering with the Sunnyvale School District, Sunnyvale Rotary, and the Northwest YMCA to help all of our school children get the food they need this summer, and be ready for success in school this fall. Our community is working together to fill the gaps for food, backpacks, school supplies, and shoe vouchers for our children. This video from last year's program illustrates the need and the community response.
Lisa Rosenblum, Sunnyvale's Director of Libraries and Community Services will soon be departing for Brooklyn, New York, where she will assume the mantle of Chief Librarian for Brooklyn Public Library. Lisa was commended by President Dick Smith for her contributions to the quality of Sunnyvale Rotary Programs during her tenure as Programs Chair. A strong supporter of community services as well as libraries, Brooklyn Public is lucky to be receiving her services. Lisa assured the club members that she is not forsaking California as she plans to return here at the appropriate time (retirement). Good luck, Lisa, and be sure to drop in on us when you are visiting the area.
Police Chief and Reading Partners
Rotary Club Member and Sunnyvale Public Safety Head, Frank Grgurina, was recently featured in the Sunnyvale Sun for his volunteer work with Reading Partners at Bishop Elementary School. Frank is also very much involved with the Sunnyvale Challenge Team.
Where do you stand with your Dinner at the Dump ticket sales? If you have sold them all and just not turned in the money, turn it in! If you haven't sold them all, get going with those sales! This is a major fund raiser for the Rotary Club of Sunnyvale, even though technically it is not our event. What we received for our philanthropic goals is solely at the discretion of Specialty Solid Waste and will in large part be determined by how supportive we are in getting butts in chairs! So sell, sell, sell, and turn in your receipts ASAP! Also, it you have not done so, check the volunteer list and sign up to help.
