Youth and Resources

Our guest speaker on May 19, was Angela Chan, Sunnyvale Neighborhood Center's Youth and Resources Manager.  More information regarding CNC can be found at Columbia Neighborhood Center.
Amoung the many community services provided to low income families are a Legal Clinic staffed by the South Asian Bar Association and free and low cost medical services provided through the Mayview Community Health Center located at the site. One program that drew considerable interest from the club members involves children reading to pets.  This program encourages children to read to a non-threatening and attentive audience of pets. The CNC is a operated by the City of Sunnyvale and comes under the Department of Libraries and Community Services.

Students Develop Business Plans at Rotary Conference
Students from 21 area high schools were invited to the sixth annual Rotary Enterprise Leadership Conference held over three days in Santa Clara and the Asilomar Conference Center in Pacific Grove, March 11-134.
Rotarian and ELC booster, Joe Ribera, with the able assistance of Shane Jacksteit, Mike Klein, and Michelle Lewis, reviewed the history, purpose and outcomes of the 6th annual Rotary ELC conference.  A detailed article on ELC 2015 was published in an earlier bulletin and should appear in the Sun this coming Friday.  The team was assisted unexpectedly by Ben Huang, visiting District 5170 Interact Council Outreach Coordinator.  Ben attended ELC 2015 as a guest of the Rotary Club of Campbell-West San Jose and was able to share his experience and opinion of the program with the audience.  The ELC 2016 steering committee held its first meeting March 26 and plans for the event are well underway.  The matter of Sunnyvale continued support of ELC will be discussed at the Board meeting, April 13.

District 5170 Interact Council Officers

A contingent of officers from the District 5170 Interact Council addressed the club today.  Lt. Governor, Oliver Borg, was accompanied by Natasha Kuo, Area 7 Director, Ben Huang, Outreach coordinator, Daniel Chan, Community Coordinator, Cara Nguyen, Area 6 Director and Stacy Phan, Area 2 director and Governor-Elect. We learned some interesting facts from their presentation, including that District 5170 is the larges Interact Organization in the world and that the number of Interactors in District 5170 exceeds the number of Rotarians!  In part the Council members came to seek support for their travel to the Rotary International Conference in Sao Paolo, Brazil. As noted below, they also came to deliver boxes of cereal in support of Sunnyvale Community Services food program.
Mother's Day Cards help fight Polio.

The cost of each card cost is $10, and constitutes a donation to the Rotary Foundation. There is no limit to the number of cards you can order.
We are presently taking orders..  Payment may be by check made payable to the Rotary Foundation, cash, credit card or you can authorize the Club Treasurer to bill you.
You can purchase cards for any mother you wish to honor, including sisters, daughters, nieces, etc, or you can elect to donate the cards to mothers at Cedar Crest Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. With each payment the appropriate documentation will be submitted to RI so that your donation is reflected in your TRF account.
Donations made to TRF through the card program will be matched 2 for 1 by the Gates Foundation, up to $35 million this year. One $10 donation could become $30 towards PolioPlus.
Please place your orders at a meeting or by email to j.ribera@comcast.net not later than April 21..

At the club meeting today Marie Kuykendall announced that the club had donated more than $600 in the past two weeks to fight hunger in Sunnyvale. A new envelope was circulated today.  Members who donate and include their name on the envelope and amount donated will receive an a letter from Sunnyvale Community Services acknowledging their contributions. Cereal collected by Specialty Solid Waste and Recycling drivers, as well as that collected by District Interact Council were delivered to Sunnyvale Community Services. Keep them in mind while shopping as the need still exists.

Rebecca Buldo, Rotarian and Event Coordinator today, with the help of Rotarian Michelle Lewis, distributed Dinner at the Dump 2015 tickets to club members.  Each member recieved 10 tickets and President, Dick Smith, emphasized that these are for sale, not for return!  Keep in mind that some members are able to sell many more than 10, so if you can't sell them yourself (but at least try!) you may find a members who needs extras you can provide.
Instead of the traditional 100 plus silent auction items offered in the past, this year there will be 15-20 high dollar item baskets raffled off.  Each basket will include high ticket electronics, such as ipads, flat screen tvs, plus appropriate accessories and consumables.  Raffle tickets will be for sale only at the event.  Rebecca will also be looking for volunteer and a signup sheet will be available at next week's meeting.

The event flyer is available as a download from this website.  A website for the event is in preparation and a link will be included as soon as it becomes available.

Winner!

Just one week after Dean Chu cleaned us out, Jerry Nabhan had the dubious honor of winning today's raffle.  Netting less than $100, Jerry can still celebrate, after all a winner is a winner!
