In lieu of a program with guest speaker, outgoing President, Dick Smith, used today's meeting as an opportunity to recognize service of Club members for their support this past year. Engraved mementos were presented to officers, chairs and others who made significant contributions of time and leadership during this trying year. Dick Smith stepped into this role in March and has provided a steady helm of leadership throughout the balance of this year. The club is in great shape for the transition to incoming President, Mike Shum. A Hawaiian themed dinner will be held at the Gaw residence this coming Friday to put the frosting on the cake. See the Events calendar and Events List for details. Dick Smith has the unique distinction of having been President of the Rotary Club of Sunnyvale three times! 2001-2002, 2009-2010, and 2014-2015 (part year).
Sunnyvale Rotary Scholarship coordinator, Dr. George Kaprelian today introduced Fremont High School Senior, Brianna Clark, who was accompanied by her mother, Mrs. Clark. Brianna, who will attend Tuskeegee Institute in Tuskeegee, Alabama in the fall, recieved a $1000 scholarship to help with expenses. As always, George acknowledged the support of the scholarship review team comprised of Rotarians Bob Lawson and Mike Gallagher in making this deserving selection.
Rotarian, Anil Agrawal, from the Rotary Club of Bareilly South, near the Nepal border, visited SVR today with his son. Anil is staying with his son for a few weeks and took this opportunity to do a "makeup" with SVR. President Dick Smith and Anil exchanged club banners. In keeping with world-wide Rotary practices, President Dick invited Anil to come to make our club his own while in the area. Anil extended an invitation to the membership to do likewise when in his area.
Where do you stand with your Dinner at the Dump ticket sales? If you have sold them all and just not turned in the money, turn it in! If you haven't sold them all, get going with those sales! This is a major fund raiser for the Rotary Club of Sunnyvale, even though technically it is not our event. What we received for our philanthropic goals is solely at the discretion of Specialty Solid Waste and will in large part be determined by how supportive we are in getting butts in chairs! So sell, sell, sell, and turn in your receipts ASAP! Also, it you have not done so, check the volunteer list and sign up to help.
President Dick Smith declared Joe Ribera, Past President (2002-2003) and current Rotary Foundation Chair, as Sunnyvale Rotary Rotarian of the Year for 2014-2015. This is an annual award presented by the outgoing President to the member who provided outstanding service and leadership to the club throughout the year. Joe has been a member of SVR since 1997, has been Foundation Chair several times and recently stepped in to administer the club website and publish the weekly bulletin. Dick made particular mention of the wise counsel and mature guidance Joe has provided to the club leadership during the recent leadership transition.
