Mahmut Altun, Director Pacifica Institute

Our guest speaker today, spoke to us about the programs and goals of the Pacifica Institute, a civic organization dedicated to promoting goodwill, understanding and cooperation between diverse cultures, religions and communities. We learned about the Muslim observance of Ramadan, its importance in the Muslim faith, and about the various ways in which the Pacifica Institute interacts with the community.

RYLA 2015 STUDENTS

Today our club was visited by several of the Homestead High School students (and one parent) selected to attend this year's Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) program at Mission Springs, Camp and Counseling Center, Scotts Valley.  Pictured are Thaih Ho, Carolyn Jung, Yatish Kamat, Allisha Kojo, June Moon and Austin Wangyu.  Elaine Ngyuen was taking her SATs and was unable to attend, but her father, Cara Ngyuen, came and spoke for her. Over an activity-filled week, these young men and women will learn leadership skills and something about themselves.  Some time after completion of the RYLA camp, they will come back to our club to share their experiences and what they learned.

Flo Stafford At Leisure

Flo Stafford displaying one of her many skills while on two-week vaction with extended family in Hawaii!  Flo said the paddle boarding is an easy skill to acquire and can be practiced at the upcoming Day on The Delta, hosted by the Nabhans.  See Event calendar and schedule.

Nabhans Delight in Grand-childrens' New Skill

Proud Grandpa, Jerry Nabhan, was beaming when he shared the story.  Granddaughter, Gianna, demonstrated her skill in water skiing.  Not to be outdone, grandson, Carter, asked for a chance to join her.  Another activity that may be indulged in at the Day on the Delta.

Mike Bares Most, not All, to Raise Funds for Breast Cancer Awareness

Everyone's favorite Big Bear (never a Teddy Bear), Mike Klein donned a size 48 J garment to raise funds in support of the Jeffery Leonard "One Flap Down Foundation" in honor of a survivor.  Mike raised over $1000 for his effort, which, as you see, was much enjoyed by the participants!

Find Waldo in Sunnyvale

Waldo, from the Where's Waldo books, is hidden in 17 local businesses around town in an effort by Leigh's Favorite Books and Bookasaurus to drive traffic to small businesses.  Sunnyvale Rotarian and bookstore proprietor, Leigh Odom is the force behind this Sunnyvale activity.  For more information read the complete article in the San Jose Mercury News.

Newly Wed, Mike Gallagher!

Rotarian, Mike Gallagher, also vacationed in Hawaii recently, and returned with the news that he, and partner Jason Chan, got married in paradise!  Congratulations to you both!
A goal of our membership committee for 2015 is to recognize members that attend 100% of our club meetings during President Mike's year.

A goal of our membership committee for 2015 is to recognize members that attend 100% of our club meetings during President Mike's year.
WHAT!  ( I hear the screamssurprise).  I have a crazy schedule, work or vacation,  how can I make 100% of the meetings?

Rotary and our club make it easy for you to have 100% attendance with a little planning and follow through.

Let's first look at the attendance requirement, outlined by our Club Constitution and paraphrased by Mike:  Come for 60% of the meeting or intend to stay for 60% of the meeting but get called away unexpectedly.

But what about my work and vacation conflicts Mike? No worries,  we have several make-up opportunities that can take place up to 2 weeks prior to your absence (hence the planning) or two weeks following your absence.  Here are your make-up options:
  1. Attend another clubs meeting.  Either locally or while traveling.  It is a great way to meet people, find out local favorites when traveling or just get away from our fine master.
  2. Attend an Interact or Rotaract club meeting.  Young adults will keep you young! #oldrotarians
  3. Attend an RI convention, District conference, District training session, District Committee meeting or any meeting sponsored by the District Governor.
  4. Attend a Club Board meeting.  Hint - this one is FREE!
  5. Attend a club service project or club sponsored community event.  Yeah Dinner @ the Dump, A Santa, Crab Feed, Golf Tournament, SCS bagging all count.
  6. Participate in an eclub meeting for 30 minutes.  This can be done at your desk while stuck in a boring conference call.  The eclub meeting material is way better and we have a local group: eclub of Silicon Valley
What a great way to learn more about our club and Rotary.

So you are gong to make up a meeting or maybe plan ahead.  How do you report it so you do not have Al chasing you around for the $10 missed meeting fee?  Easy-peasy.  (this is the follow through part) Just send a quick email to club secretary Nancy Smith outlining the date you missed, date your made-up and the location or type of your make-up meeting.  This email can be received up to 4 weeks from your missed meeting.

I look forward to rewarding you all at the end of July so we can build momentum for the full year.

Mike
