Jeff Rosen, Santa Clara County District Attorney

Today, election day 2016, Santa Clara County District Attorney, Jeff Rosen, spoke to the Rotary Club of Sunnyvale.  DA Rosen, gave a presentation on the findings of his Office's study of race and prosecution in Santa Clara County 2013-2015.  The DA's office intends to perform the study annually, spanning the most recent two year period.  The next report will cover 2014-2016.  The Santa Clara County District Attorney's office prosecutes approximately 40,000 criminal cases per year, 80% of which are misdemeanors. Last year 2015 there were 45 homicides in our county. More information on the activities and results of the Santa Clara County DA office can be found on their website. The study looked at defendants by race and compares the percent prosecuted to the percent represented in the county.  It also compares race of defendants to race of victims.  The report is available here.  Jeff Rosen has been DA of Santa Clara County since his election to the post in 2010.  Among the startling statistics Jeff shared with SVR during his talk is that the High School drop out rate for Santa Clara County is at the State average of 11.1%.  Moreover, that by decreasing that rate to 10%, just 1% less than it is currently, would reduce the number of crimes prosecuted by 20%! That would mean 9 fewer homicides in Santa Clara County.
