ROMAC Presentation - Gaynor Scholls

Gaynor Schols is the new ROMAC Southern Region Chair, managing all districts in Victoria and Tasmania. Gaynor spoke to us about ROMAC, Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children, which is an RI-approved programme owned, funded and staffed by all Rotary clubs in Australia and New Zealand.
The mission of ROMAC is “To provide medical treatment for children from developing countries in the form of life saving and/or dignity restoring surgery not accessible to them in their home country”
Many of these children will die without treatment.
  • Priority is given to those countries that form part of Australian or NZ Rotary Districts (PNG, Timor Leste, Fiji, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu).
  • Since ROMAC began in 1988, 385 children have been treated.
Gaynor spoke about some of the recent patients treated in Victoria including Failyne, a wonderful young girl from Vanuatu, pictured at left.
Two new patients are booked in at Monash Medical Centre this month. Lihn Da Vo will undergo major facial reconstruction and Otto Kepae will have cardiac surgery.
Fundraising is obviously a major part of ROMAC’s work so all Rotary clubs are asked to give an annual donation to keep this wonderful programme going, but private donations are also gladly accepted.
ROMAC requires volunteers to work on committees and help care for patients and parents when they are in Melbourne. If you would like to volunteer your time or are able to offer accommodation and care for short term stays during recuperation, please contact Gaynor by email to  gaynor.schols@gmail.com
