The Geelong Citizens’ Jury project is well underway. You've been identified as an important stakeholder for your community and we're seeking your support to ensure we hear as many voices as possible during the final stage of the wider community engagement.

During September and October 2016, members of the community have been submitting their ideas to be considered by the Geelong Citizens’ Jury. The community's ideas and feedback will be provided to the citizens jury and will be important information for the jury to consider.

What we'd like you to do:
  1. Complete the "Vote Democracy Geelong" Survey - this takes 5 minutes and there is no need to register. Over 1000 surveys have been completed already! If you can't complete the survey online, hard copy surveys are available in public libraries across Greater Geelong and the Council's Customer Service Centre located at 100 Brougham Street, Geelong. A pdf of the survey is attached here - please email any completed hard copy surveys to Geelong.Jury@delwp.vic.gov.au as the survey closes at 5pm, Monday 24 October.
  2. Make a submission - you can use the online form or this can be in any format you like and can include recommendations about who the jury should hear from.
  3. Forward this email to your networks encouraging them to complete the survey, make a submission or collect submissions from their networks to provide for the jury's consideration.

I

n order to support the community to contribute its views, some specific resources have been prepared by Local Government Victoria (LGV), including a Background Paper to help inform people about council electoral structures.  The full version of this paper and a Supplementary Paper to stimulate ideas about other ways to improve local democracy in Greater Geelong are available in the library of the Geelong Citizens' Jury website.  We have also attached a summarised version of the Background Paper which is also on the website.

What happens next:
The jury is a panel of 100 randomly selected, representative Greater Geelong residents. They met each other for the first time on 13 October 2016. The citizens' jury will recommend to the Minister for Local Government, the Hon Natalie Hutchins MP, how the Greater Geelong community will be democratically represented by a future council. It will meet and deliberate over three Saturdays: 29 October, 12 November and 26 November. More information about the jury and how you can observe jury meetings will be available on the website this week.

The community's feedback will be provided to the jury at its second meeting on 12 November 2016 and made available for the community on the Geelong Citizens' Jury website.

You can also subscribe to receive regular updates on the Geelong Citizens' Jury.

We look forward to providing your ideas to the jury. Thank you if you've already contributed your ideas for the jury. Please forward this email to anyone who might be interested in having a say.
